Clarifying the rear support question a little further, you can even support 2 BG's each with 12 bases with a single BG of only 6 bases by having the supporting unit in a column straddling the line between the 2 supported BG's.

Suppose I have 4 light artillery shooting at a 8-base unit. I score 4 hits. Does this qualify for the "more than 1 reason to test" since I inflicted both 2 shooting hits from artillery & 1 HP3B?

If this is the case, then the modifier to the cohesion test for the above example would be an impressive ...

Instead of having 2 files x 3 ranks (as you have drawn), I was considering 3 files x 2 ranks. Then I can have them facing directly forward and still support both 8 ...

If my notes are correct, rear support occurs at 8 MU for foot and 12 MU for mounted.

However, as MikeK points out, putting the Sp 8 MU back is problematic anyway because a) they are too far back to quickly plug the hole, and b) they will likely get disrupted anyway by the fleeing Pk
