My own take would be that a kinked column cannot shift, so if you need the shift (such as Frederic's woods example) you have to move through the obstruction. The other option would be to turn and wheel as a line, till you cannot move due to obstructions (though this time you can shift and pile up). ...

If the pursued shift/contract/turn to avoid terrain and are no longer to the front of the pursuers, the pursuers can wheel to keep chasing them.

The Catalan company did try to flank me, but I had two BGs more than he did, so there was always a BG facing his own troops, and he was not willing to get entangled in the open where I could reinforce more easily. The Turks flanked me with LH, but I just ignored them and kept marching. I did hide so...

Just an update. I played in the Middle Ages pool in Barcelona (the XVIth edition of their ancient tournament, first time with FoG) with the army above, and I would not change anything, despite finishing 5th out of 10. It was just my mistakes and bad pairings. First game was against a Catalan Company...

You can charge broken units, and actually it is a good mission for LH and LF once the lines are engaged and there is little skirmishing to be done. You charge, conform, and nothing happens till the joint action phase, when the broken units rout away (p. 107, routers in contact with the enemy). If th...

Now that I have seen the FAQ for the impact phase, I have to agree with you. However I dislike using a FAQ for what should be a rule addenda, because the solution is not obvious if you only use the book, as the current discussion shows.

A broken BG routs directly away from an enemy in contact, so they would turn back in the direction they came. If the cavalry stays in contact the HF would lose a base and keep running away, rather than towards their edge.

I also do not see in the rules a requirement to provide a direction before evasion is resolved. You mean apart from the bit at the top of page 66? This applies before an evade move is made (but after the decision to evade has been taken). That is why I excepted it if there was an evasion to resolve...

Clearly we are playing differently. I do not see anywhere in the rules that the enemy charge must contact the intercept charge. The rules say "This may partly or wholly contact the intercepting battle group, and may or may not contact the original target of the charge at all." I am not a n...

It says "A battle group can declare charges on as many enemy battle groups as can be "legally" contacted within this move distance." The unclear "path of the charge" appears later. However the only real requirement is no wheeling if you contact less bases. I may well be...

It depends, as in that case the knights could be a charge target, so they could not intercept. If the enemy could not reach the knights normally, then the knights could intercept. However, as I read the rules, if the charger was an skirmisher and it had not rolled a CMT when declaring the charge, it...

I am not a designer, but your proposal favors the defender over the charger, and makes it easier to charge with troops that require a CMT. In your example, if the enemy LH can wheel to avoid the Cv while contacting the same number of bases, it can do so, so your ingenious trap was not so foolproof. ...

I like the army lists, but I dislike the army list books... Mostly because if you take armies from the same period and the same geographical area they are bound to be similar, with a few noticeable exceptions. So in a typical book you may have three or four army "themes", plus a few oddbal...

Thanks for the kind comments. I think it is a very valid question, because many people I play are really playing to avoid losing rather than playing to win, trusting in their opponent to make a big mistake before they do it. There is a clear satisfaction when you play someone who also aims to win, e...

Two comments on the list, as I am doing tests with a Swiss army as well. The Enfant perdus cannot be used after 1360, so you should get another group of handgunners, scrounging some points from somewhere. As well, the Duc of Lorraine is a Subgeneral, not an ally (and nominally the C-in-C), so he is ...

I do not think that breaking the enemy's center is a clear sign of victory against many armies. Quite a few times with Romans the legion line is Ok, but they have lost enough light troops/auxilliaries to lose the game. Now we tend to tally points in the joint phase to avoid surprises, as novice play...

I do not know about others, because it is true that most people do not use ambushes, but there are three reasons why I want to use ambush markers. Assuming I am using an army with good MF, if not, it is just point 3. 1. To advance troops. If there is concealing terrain in a flank (and I try to help ...

Swiss Cheese

I am doing some tests with a Swiss army for a Middle Ages pool, and I have found two potential cheese situations to exploit. - LH bait. This is more like LF bait,, as LF is the target but a possible tactic when enemy LH is chasing my LF. In the HF battle line behind the LF, turn the BGs 90 degrees, ...

Making bases of only knights, only sergeants and only billmen would help in case you take different armour status. Use the knights as the front bases for Hvy. Armored, sergeants or billmen and sergeants for armoured, superior, and only billmen for armoured, average.
