Swiss Cheese

Post by jre »

I am doing some tests with a Swiss army for a Middle Ages pool, and I have found two potential cheese situations to exploit.

- LH bait. This is more like LF bait,, as LF is the target but a possible tactic when enemy LH is chasing my LF. In the HF battle line behind the LF, turn the BGs 90 degrees, so they are sideways. If LH charges the LF, it will evade behind the HF unless you do not know how to measure distances, and the LH will hit the flank of the HF rather than stop at 1 MU. Opportunities to use it will not happen often, but I think it will be useful as a deterrent for LH charges, explaining to my opponent why I am doing those 90º turns.

- Storming fortresses. This requires a sacrificial charge. Hit FF with good troops on them (if they are mediochre troops the Swiss will just charge along, but it would be useful with less powerful HF against fortified archers) with a single sacrificial BG in the split between defenders if any. 4 strong halberdier BGs are good for this. The rest of the line wait at charge distance. If by some miracle they are winning, go ahead. If they lose and break, the enemy will charge out of the FF, ideally hitting your stationary BGs. In any case, now they are out of the FF.

If I think of more, I will post them as well.
