What are the odds?

In a game at the weekend a bunch of light foot ran away from superior lance cavalry. The cavalry caught them in the rear with two bases then lost the combat 1-0 and lost a base.

Rather embarrasing for the Cavalry player.

If you're wheeling not all troops are making a full move.

Field fortifications

Just a quick one here. Do field fortifications have to be in even numbers?

Strictly speaking they aren't a battle group so I'm thinking no but I can't find anything either way on the subject.

What do you say?

Why not just throw in an extra role before the initiative role to see who has strategic advantage? Winner gets to chose who's terrain is chosen from after the initiative role.

We've never had a problem with this. We've always stopped outside 6" and accepted that it will take more than two moves to get into contact with HF. I think the fact that I use MF Bow encourages this as If I can't shoot you then you can't contact in two moves.

It's only drilled troops that this would be a problem with, I don't know that I'd fancy it with undrilled. And it's not a retreat, it's a tactical withdrawl :D

A charging question

Another question that came up last night. I have a BG of four light horse in a gap between a forest and the edge of the table. Facing them are two BG's of four light horse, one straight ahead and the other to the right and angled at about 45*. Both declared a charge and my light horse turned and ran...

A turning question

In a game last night I had a unit of 7 Longbow laid out like so facing up the page-

AAAAAA
A

They then turned 90* to the left.

My question is, what formation should they end up in?

Would it be

AAAAAA
A Facing left or something totally different?

Cheers, Dave

I think it would depend on the Army list on a case by case basis. not having my books here I can't say for sure.

Seems to me that Arty could be good for denying an area to your opponents. Even if he doesn't come near them he's restricting himself where he can go. If the terrain layout works for you they could deny a vital gap that your opponent might be able to utilise or at least make him hesitate to use it. ...

The intercepting unit cannot make contact unless to the flank or rear of the intercepted unit. In all other circumstances they stop short of any enemy and let them make contact. The move distance is the Maximum they can move to acheive this.

What I meant is, if each battle group fights individually, then it works out it's own dice individually. That's my take anyway.

Each battle group fights individually against each other. The BG of 4 V's the 2 BG's of 2 would actually be two seperate combats that just both happened to include the BG of 4.

You might have problems against a large MF shooty army like HYW English but I've played against someone with an army with a lot of LH bow and they were a right pain in the backside. Wasn't using my normal army though.

Having looked at the rules you don't actually get to choose which order they evade in. As they are responding to a charge they react in the order that the charges happen, therefore your opponent has control of who moves when.

This question isn't about the order you evade in, it's actually about do you roll all Variable Move dice and then move them or do you roll for, say, A then move it, then roll for B and move and last but not least then roll for C and move it.
