Re: Cover and Line of Sight
This at least is covered in the declaring charges section of the Impact Phase. Yes but does not seem to say, for instance, if a unit of light cavalry 1" into cover can see and charge a unit 4" outside of cover? Is visiblity a 180 degree arc based on the front edge? or something else? Can ...

Cover and Line of Sight
The rules on visibility and Line of Sight seem a bit minimalistic and well hidden! Firstly, Are there any rules governing how a unit in cover can observe out of cover? Do you need line of sight at the beginning of an Impact phase in order to charge or intercept? Don't the limitations on BG formation...

Thanks
Thanks for the rapid reply. To answer your question about the flank charge - I think it was a flank charge. The Hastati was behind the flank although it needed to wheel about 10 degrees in order to contact the flank (there were 2 other units in contact to the front). Although your comments on the im...

Engaged pikes charged in the flank
A complex situation occured last night. A 12 strong, 4 rank pike block was engaged with a couple of Roman Units to its front. The following turn a block of 4 Hastati charged the pike block at an angle to it corner contacted the 3rd base back. The second file of Hastati stepped forward to act another...

Exchanging Ranks
How do you exchange ranks within a battlegroup? As an example, a mixed spear / bow battlegroup turns through 180 dgrees and now has bow to front and spear to rear - how does it bring spear to the front if it wants to keep facing in the new direction. Or, If a lance / bow cavalry battlegroup in 2 ran...

Got it!
The LF are going to die. They cannot cancel. They should have thought about that before they charged headlong to their death. No they do not need to pass a CMT. However if the Archers could have counted as a target of their charge,(e.g. if they had to step forwards into them upon contacting the oth...

OK ....
Well thank for your prompt answers. Things are getting a bit clearer. So..... The Archer does the intercept charge (it was beside and further back - not actually behind Light Foot (2)). It then stops short of Light Foot (1). Must Light Foot (1) now charge into the Archers or can they cancel their ch...

Evading from Intercept Charges?
I got a bit tied up in knots with intercept charges and evades last night - can someone please help me. The situation was that Light Foot (1) wanted to charge Light Foot (2) , who had a unit of friendly Archers beside and a bit behind the Light Foot. The Light Foot (1) declared a charge and Light Fo...

The rules for this are on P48 Essentially a commander can move in any direction and the maximum distance that can be moved is the move of a light horse BG. There is no need to wheel or turn. [snip] There is no rocket science here, just measuring. I think I have been a bit lax in the past. I have me...

Quite refreshing really
Isn't it quite refreshing that different troops have different strengths and qualities and that numbers can make up for quality.
Makes a change from Knights and Light Horse which are the usual suspects when it comes to "good" troops.

Simple Advances after a Turn
I found out at the weekend that I had been reading the rule wrong. After most Turns you are allowed to do a SIMPLE advance. I had assumed that this meant not "Difficult" (full move, no wheels) I found out that simple means not "Complex" or "Impossible" as defined in the...

Well I'm glad I wasn't the umpire called upon when this came up :D You were the unpire and you called it right according to the rules, must say sorry to both you and Matt over the heated discussion over the movement at the end of a long hard fought game. Why not just a blanket no more than 90 degrees? KISS and all that. I would agree with Nic that a standard 90 degrees would be simple. I think the small reduction in LH slipperyness would be a positive step. It also has the advantage of bringing 15 and 25mm closer in line - since, with the extra fro...

Over Slippy Light Cavalry
I had another great day at the MAWS FoG Boot Camp. Since there were no other 25mm aries there, Hammy very kindly lent me some 15mm Arabs, so I essentially an army consisting of Light Cavalry and Shooty Cavalry. So this was a new army and a new scale for me - so I had more learning to do. On one flan...

My thoughts
I'm a newbie to the rules, and struggling with the same questions - so perhaps my comments don't help much, but.... I can see the elegance of fielding balanced legions, however I am a bit torn since different unit sizes do work differently in the rules. In particular a 2 base triarii BG will explode...

Hmm isn't that at least partially contradicting your own answers here: http://www.slitherine.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=6889 ? I thought that the other thread says the same thing or at least says that I had been playing this wrongly and having checked the rules it is not allowed for a BG to wheel ou...

Wheeling in a confined space
How do units wheel in a comfined space - e.g. with units to either flank? To give an example, Three BG of infantry, in 2 ranks, are in a line. The middle one wants to wheel to face down the line - while the other 2 stay still. 1. Can it wheel from its starting position, even though the rear corner o...
