Your comment on dice rolling is a surprise. <snip> Far from being a problem, this has proved to be one of the easiest and most entertaining parts of the game. One man's fair is another man's foul I guess, this is an area that consistently is criticised while we're playing, clearly your experience i...

Re: FOG/DBMM comparison games in pictures
Having decided to have a bash at the DBMM rules we thought it would be instructive to write up our first game on this site as a comparison between the rule sets. Very cool, not sure it ultimately belongs on the beta forum here, but I found it very interesting to read as, like most people, I'm looki...

The counter issue came up again last night with my opponent having a completely different convention to mine. This isn't a big deal with a game once a week or so but I don't much fancy 6 different marking conventions in a weekend tournament. Not a deal-breaker by any stretch but given that the syste...

In the case the other night it was against knights so the impact was significant. It may be the desired outcome if there's evidence it was used like that but it struck me as clever rule manipulation (which I have no problem with in general but is one of the things I thought the testing was to look f...

Re: different approach
the best way to accept the change in approach is to playtest extensively to understand the meaning and the contain of the rules FOG is a new concept totally different from DBM or other rule sets I completely agree that only more games will give me a thorough understanding of the rules, I just think...

Good point, I ruled out the turn around and move away because I figured I'd be broken by then anyway, but if I'd anticipated the situation I could possibly have moved up and turned around while just out of range and each time he advanced into shooting range I'd move away and use a general to bolster...

Is this just inexperience with the rules? ... This happens in any game system (and in real battles). If you get a bad match up you have a problem. Not entirely true, in DBM I could have spent pips and moved the Cv individually out of range and at least limit the impact. With FoG I had to leave appr...

Counters and clutter
I was really struck tonight by how much rubbish was around the troops, during a melee phase we had counters for the various cohesion levels and dice behind the units to track hits. Add this to the general clutter of measuring sticks and such and it was largely irrellevant how pretty the troops or te...

Ugh. Yes, there's lots of dice, but that's ok. What just sucks the life out of me is having to work out how many of my unit are effected by camels and knocking of 1 per 3, am I fragmented? another 1 per 2. Are any LF contributing then they drop 1 per 2 as well. Remove the various penalties from the ...

Breaking units
Really, really, really dislike the way units break. The cohesion test itself, the new 6:1, with so many more dice being rolled the combats are less swingy but the CT's are a minefield. Roll snake-eyes and you've effectively got a hole in your line but it's not 1 element wide it's an entire unit. Sta...

Single ranked cavalry evasion
My understanding is that single ranked Cv can evade a charge but must stand and take shooting. A unit of Cv tonight ended up facing MF bow and just got shot to pieces as it couldn't do anything. The Cv in single rank can skirmish away if they're charged but, oddly to me, they have to stand and be sh...

Camels
Had a situation tonight where poor quality camels sat just behind MF bow were used to drive down the factors of the knights fighting the bow. Seemed odd that a unit my opponent wanted nowhere near an actual fight would be tucked in just behind the front line and have a huge impact (nearly the entire...

Deployment
My initial thought when I read the deployment rules was "excellent!" as that aspect is one of my weaknesses under DBM and the order of march means I can react much more to my opponents deployment and am less likely to be caught by surprise. Yes I should probably be trying to force him to r...

Re: Testing continues as valentines day 2008 approaches fast
In a way what would be most interesting is on a 1 to 10 scale now how happy would we all be to play FOG laterst as our main ruleset? Can I be a rare negative overall opinion here (sorry :( )? As it stands, I'd have to answer that question with a "not very", so 2 or 3? Ultimately I'll go w...

I agree with Simon that the die should be removed from the bases facing the cause of disorder, it makes more sense. Why should the knights at the other end fight less well because their mates are fighting camels somewhere in the distance? It should be those fighting the camels that suffer. I think ...

As it is 2 BG of K with a split down the middle you get 4 dice affected in each BG so both must lose 1 dice. 2 dice of those affected are vs the Sp and 2 vs the Camels so in this case you would be able to choose where to drop the dice at present for 5-3/2-2/2-2/5-3 if you chose to reduce vs the spe...

Evading an interception?
If a charge is intercepted is it possible to evade? No idea if this would be historical, just struck me that I'd want to reverse my Lh charge if it looks like I'll get hit my something heavier. It's also one way to draw out enemy Kn, by threatening their Lh support, though Huw hardly needed that in ...

Not shooting at Broken enemy
This came up in a couple of games, the rules say that broken troops can't be shot as there's no benefit but I found two cases where causing one more base of casualties would take an enemy BG below its autobreak value and effectively remove it from the table. It's odd to have to stand by and let the ...
