Fields of Glory, oh dear, not very evocative of the period. As someone has said, more American Civil War than anything else. I can understand not going with faux Latin or Greek as it could imply a follow on from DBM/DBA and could get confused with DBMM. But Fields of Glory just doesn't cut it. Besid...

Richard, I actually still use them under 6th edition. They are good when used correctly, but not as good as they apparently were under 7th. I never used them under those rules so I have no personal experience. I tried using them under DBM but apart from the number of figure involved, they were not r...

Hi, my favourite army is Aztec. It would be interesting to know if the lists are going to be written from the point of view of their effectiveness against the Spanish Conquistadores, or their effectiveness against other Meso American nations. The reason I ask is that DBM took the former stance whils...

I feel it should be noted that there is very little evidence for any but a handful of berserks. In general they formed part of the retinue of the great Viking leaders. It would be extremely unlikely for an army to contain enough to make up a base/element/stand so they should not even be in the list ...

In my opinion there is already available an ancients rule system that works, WRG 6th Edition, and it has been around for a very long time, 26 years. It has all the things you have been talking about, but does involve a certain amount of paperwork. There are still a significant number of people playi...

Tilman, there is no really good reason for using metric. As I said before Games Workshop rules are all in Imperial and they are the most popular wargames rules in the world especially among the younger gamers. Speaking personally I was the first school year in Britain to be taught metric right from ...

Tilman, bases have been in metric and the rules distances in Imperial for over 25 years, 6th edition, WAB, Warhammer Fantasy, and the rules all work with no from that point of view. Plus all the table sizes are based on a 6' by 4' format for 25mm as well. To argue that mixing metric base sizes with ...

If we started to make such posts we would be accused of attempting to kill off DBM :) But isn't that your intention, from a business point of view ? After all if you were that bothered about DBM surviving you wouldn't be writing/producing Art of War. It seems obvious to me that a large number of th...

Hi Andy,
but surely being "terrained out of the game" is often the result of not taking a balanced army in the first place.

To be honest I don't think it will attract many, if any 6th edition players, except maybe to tinker, as they do now with WAB and DBM. The real target audience is the DBM fraternity, but I may be wrong in this. By the way I am a stick in the mud 6th edition dinosaur that tinkers with 25mm DBM. regard...

Hi James,
I have just looked at the link and there is no Paul Frith on there and I played at Milton Keynes in 2004, 2005 and 2006.

Possum - absolutely, in the UK at least Games Workshop uses Imperial. The only exception to this is the Lord of the Rings games which uses for example 7.5cm/3" in the rules, and apparently this was only because New Line Cinemas from whom they have the licence, insisted. Otherwise that would hav...

This is a common problem with a lot of ancient rules. Historically successful armies are not very useful against the historical opponents they defeated. Examples of this in 6th edition would be Middle Imperial Romans against Palmyrans. The Romans find it very tough against the cataphracts, but histo...

I suspect that one of the reasons why there have been so many incarnations of DBM is that they were not properly playtested before release. I can only applaud the cautious attitude you are taking towards the release, but would emphasise that when it comes to play testing there is almost no such thin...

I agree 7th had a lot of issues that were never really resolved, which is why 6th hung around all the way through it and through the other side.

There may be 425 people on the DBM list of ratings, but that doesn't even cover all the people who play in competitions. I do, and as far as I am aware I am not on this list. It has to be said though, that the people who will have the most to say about the way the rules work and list contents etc wi...

Another reason for WRG 6th Edition still being popular in Germany, as they are in the UK, is that they are a good set of rules that have stood the test of time.

At present under UK law I believe it is illegal to put up signposts in metric, so there is no argument for using this system under EU law. In fact Games Workshop have just released the latest edition of the Warhammer Fantasy Rules using Imperial as the measuring system, and I feel they would not do ...
