On a mostly open battlefield, the Sentorious's Lusitanians took up a position behind the starting line, using terrain for their Caetrati whenever possible, including anchoring their left flank in the lone patch of woods. They deployed their cavalry on their right. The Romans responded with a strong line of legionaries, with their sole medium infantry the only victim of Lusitanian skirmishers. The cavalry fight on the open flank was tactically a draw, with the fight on going at the end of the game. Operationally it meant that, though the Roman heavies crashed into the Caetrati with their usual success, they ended up out flanked on both the returning Lusitanian nobles from the cavalry battle and Caetrati emerging from the woods. Despite some valiant fighting, the legionaries couldn't survive the flank attacks.

Division B

Ironclad Gallic 300-101 BC with Samnite allies defeated Bagatrix Numidian 55 BC-6 AD with Roman allies, 61-50

The Gallic battleline pushed forward against the opposing enemy close order troops which were bolstered by elephants behind the centre and by a superior cavalry forces on the left and by more numerous light and other infantry on the right. This led to a fierce and exhausting battle which saw the Gallic warbands led by their superior units with their Samnite compatriots eventually overcome the opposition on the centre and right. In this a stirring example was resistance by a lone Saminite unit with chariot support which helped to anchor the extreme right.

Meanwhile the Numidian cavalry both heavy and lights made strong inroads against the Gallic left leading to its destruction.

The climax of the battle then centred on whether the successful Numidian cavalry with remaining infantry support could overwhelm the arriving Gallic infantry reinforcements before sufficient of the latter arrived to turn the tide. In this fierce final struggle (see screenshot) the quality of the Gallic units including a General present made the difference and enabled the victory. Stones1985 (Selecuid/Parthian) defeated snooky51 (Pyrrhic/Samnite) by a score of 62 to 29.

The game was fairly close with the Seleucids having an edge with the scores at around 45 to 35. But one fortuitous rampaging cavalry charge and an equally lucky rallying pikemen put some clear water bewteen the two armies.

Ironclad Gallic 300-101 BC with Samnite allies defeated Swuul Egyptian 664-571 BC with Assyrian allies, 56-29

This was a hard fought battle, on an extended front across the more open areas of the field. The Gallic army was relying on its infantry which formed the centre and right whilst its cavalry and light chariots on the left had a more difficult task opposing an enemy mounted flank included three heavy chariots.

The infantry fight in particular proved long and exhausting; the Gauls being helped by some isolated breakthroughs but this was offset temporarily by the warbands leavinng the line in pursuit. Meanwhile the mounted battle saw eventual success for the Egyptians but this followed a prolonged struggle which included some infantry support. Consequently the victorious units were not able to influence the outcome of the critical infantry struggle elsewhere.

In terms of losses it was fairly equal for most of the contest and it was only at the end that the balance changed significantly when the Gallic infantry helped by returning units was able to launch a final devastating attack. Thanks to Swuul for a good and enjoyable game.

Div A: A match between Stew101 and Morat has not started yet. tyronec remains undefeated and is the likely first place. Second and third are up for anyone to grab though.
Div B: First and second remain with Maeglyr and SimonLancaster respectively. Third place is still open.
Div C: All games complete. Malabar26 remains first. However, with his victory over rockmanbob123, Chris Townsend comes in second over Solemnace.

Our lancers surrounded and slowly ground down the massive number of Hebrew foot through flanking attacks after seeing off their supporting chariots and horse.
