Ah, thanks for that. Seems strange that shock mounted are at more of an advantage if they stand still and let impact foot charge them. I would have thought the other way round. So lancer armed Cavalry/knights/cataphracts will be +1 POA if they stand still or level POA if they charge versus impact f...

FWIW every time I've fought longbows in the open with knights I've managed to ride them down (the other week despite losing 2 generals in the first impact - ouch!), but every time they have skulked in terrain or behind stakes I've found them difficult to beat on the basis that they tend to have dis...

Armour doesn't matter at Impact. I'm assuming they are medium foot...Heavy Weapon is useless against mounted in Impact also. So, against non-lancer mounted (in the open) you'll be - and they +. If they have Lance (or are Heavy Chariots) you'll be -- and they ++! Yes, once you get to melee your HW ca...

Great...I'd agree that it's certainly easier for me to use Drilled foot than Undrilled...;) given my experience. 3x8 units can be 4x6 also, retaining a good BG count: 4 TC 6 BG 4 LCh Superior/Drilled/Bow 4 BG 6 MF Protected/Average/Drilled/Light Spear-Swordsmen front rank, Bow second rank 5 BG 6 LF ...

A lottery actually involves several calculations. One is Expected Value (EV)...or rather what the exchange of buying one ticket is worth monetarily. This will almost always be negative due to the payoff matrix, filtering down through the odds, being less than the cost of one ticket. Also, as a payou...

The problem I find with Superior Roman Legionaries who are Skilled Swordsmen in this circumstance is their cost. Each frontage is 28 points against the Average pike frontage of 24 points. Along a broad frontage you will often find your line of legions overlapped on each end given the total cost diff...

I think with regard to die rolls there are some critical ones that can cause huge swings. I had a Poor, Undrilled battle group and it happened to have Portable Obstacles. Well, it's pretty hard to put down Portable Obstacles with a Poor, Undrilled BG. So, I put my IC with that battle group to give t...

Mitanni
I have a bunch of chariots...and wanted to look at a Biblical army emphasizing them. I can fairly well put Mitanni together given the support troops on the list and my available figures. I'm just wondering about he necessity to be Drilled, or not drilled. The list choice would be either: 4 TC 6 BG 4...

For a base to fight as an overlap it must be in corner to corner or edge to edge contact with the overlapped base, or behind a base in such a postition (where it would fight/add POA if in frontal contact). You can't go past the enemy front fighting rank and count as overlap. (IIRC) Can't you? I bre...

Sorry...yes, Stakes are portable defenses...Temporary Fortifications would be a 'next step' of a set of immobile but short term constructions. If you had time to build a Ditch and Line it with stakes, mounding the earth atop your side...that would be a Temporary Field Fortifications. Just the stakes...

Temporary Field Fortifications are intended to represent things like Stakes (sharpened wooden sticks, naughty end pointing towards enemy), Emplaced Chains, makeshift barriers (overturned carts, etc.) Something that a body of troops could carry with them and set up quickly in front of their body to s...

Very prosaic. So, pray, tell me the weaknesses of Later Ottomann Turk, then. Not 'it can't beat Swiss', what is it's bete noire? Because, if you follow this thread back, my point is that it is a heads I win, tails I don't lose army (especially without Serbs). I have no problem with knowing that the...

You count full bases if the rear rank is the 1st shooting rank so 3 bases shooting, one thought that struck me with this is when you lose a base which in a mixed group will almost certainly be a front rank base ,the rear rank base moves up,does that now become the 1st shooting rank ? Grahams list by...

a) Check all POA b) If net POA for both bodies are even, mounted with light spear are now + and opposing body - An example: Cavalry with Light Spear charge MF Impact Foot in the open. MF Impact Foot are +, Cavalry are + (for fighting MF in the open). Thus being at even POA, the Cavalry light spear t...

During deployment, leave a depth gap of 2 stands of HF so that you can place your defensive spear last, right in front of where knights have deployed, but in front of your other troops (who then move to flanks). I have been deploying the Elephants and Defensive Spear last. The defensive spear has b...

Italian Wine
...or murkier, depending on the wine... Clearer, clearer... Italian wine is frank! As it was made from chiavennasca (nebbiolo), it was both clear and arguably frankish in origin. Although as an italian wine, it probably makes one more credulous... :D I always felt nothing but credulous upon ...
