too big imho, to be compatible with essex.

stick to the VVV transfers, they should work fine, especially if you shade the shade before applying the transfer, depending on painting style of course.

Thanks for the reply, and the information, Jon. Good to know.

Xyston Shields vs. Essex Shields - Size Compatible?

Hello, everyone. Wife picked up a Gallic Starter Army from Essex. She would like to use transfers instead if painting each shield by hand. However, only options appear to be either VVV or Little Big Man Studios. Does anyone know enough about the Xyston shields to know how they compare to Essex shiel...

Samnites - How do they play? (Army List Added)

Just curious about how the Samnites play in FOG. They fascinate me, but I'm not sure how well the Medium Foot would hold up against, say, an army of Heavy Foot. Would it be possible to make them more flexible by adding some heavy foot allies, or is the cost too high in terms of points? Edited: Here'...

What you have to do is ask the stateside supplier to understate the value of the goods. Khurasan's website specifically says: "Please do not ask me to misrepresent the price of your delivery as this is against the law in the US and would subject me to liability." A lot of American compani...

I'm well aware that they didn't wear uniforms per se, perhaps to satisfy the more pedantic forum users I should have said clothing colours instead of uniform colours. Ferb - I'm not sure we have much on Avars in terms of their preferences for color. I don't recall there being references to multi-co...

Re: Too many city militia

There is a maximum of 12 city milita so you need to drop one of the BGs of imitation legionaries. For a Bosporan army with a substantial infantry component, I think I would be more inclined to buy the city militia as 2 BG of 6 of armoured LS, swordsmen MF and supplement them with the Thracians with...

Bosporan (84BC) @ 600 Points - Your Thoughts?

Hello, everyone. I'm looking to build another army. The Bosporan list (circa 84 BC) gives me an interesting option to use imitation legionary types who might actually do something for Mithridates. My opponent and I have agreed to begin with 600 point lists. Here's what I have. I think it works out n...

No...mario is right...do a google for juba or massinissa....see what they look like on their coins. :) Ok... in that case, they should all be bronze, copper, silver, or gold...;) In seriousness, though, not every dark skinned person has tell-tale facial features, bone structure, etc. Look at some o...

99% of ancients figures are either based on an Osprey book, or on an old WRG Armies and Enemies book. Neither of these are photographically accurate except for the odd figure for exceptionally well documented armies. And even then it always involves an artist "artistically" extrapolating ...

Re: Numidians: Appearance??

Anyone have any good factual details on ancient Numidians and their appearance?....skin tone(s), etc? It seems they match more the Greeks/Carthaginians/Phoenecians than darker Africans. Yes? I knew too Numidians skin tone was near to Carthaginians. I remember also Scipio married one of his sister t...

well...Dead does have pink Companions As I have stated before that is a light purple shade they are wearing. I have seen so many minis of companions with purple that I decided to join in with it. My Selucid superior pikes also wear purple tunics. Light blue also appears to have been a popular colou...

Thanks for the website; it is one of the ones that I checked out. I am still working out the issues for myself on the size of battle groups. The arguement seems to be maneuverability vs survivability & damage potention. In smaller armies I use smaller skirmesher battle groups but the weekness f...

Re: Mid-Republican Roman - Italian Allies Question

I am a new player that has picked up the main rule book and the army book Rise of Rome. For my first two armies I picked Mid-Republican Roman and Later Carthaginian. I have been doing research on the time period and the armies. I have also been looking at a lot of photographs of other people armies...

I bought all my French in shako and habit long since a older uniform would always be in use lare but not the other way. You would never consider playing a game from the revolutionary period then? I'm just assuming this from your earlier posts. Your style has been 'buy a second army'. All you have t...

There is also one other reference (maybe it's Matyszak in this place? Don't have my copy available for immediate reference.) that argues they fought quite fiercely, being unwilling to be taken captive by their former countrymen. Most likely because they were executed for desertion upon capture! If ...

Not at all a problem on all counts. Glad to help. I'm not sure about the "not so well trained bit" for the Imitation Legion, especially when one considers the Roman deserters in the Pontic ranks and the training of the force by Roman exiles; Barker (and at least one other source, which esc...

May as well play fantasy if you are not going to at least try and use accurate figures. There are enough ranges on the market to at least make an effort. It is historical miniatures wargaming after all. D Agreed with Wombat. I think sometimes it's ok to use figures that look the part, particularly ...

Large blocks are good - tens on a four frontage are fairly safe from bowfire. Not that bothered about the odd base loss either. The good thing about bows is that they don't evade :) Double plus at impact is always nice and two generals go a long way when you have two blocks of ten. You should be lo...
