Samnites - How do they play? (Army List Added)

Post by Mithras »

Just curious about how the Samnites play in FOG. They fascinate me, but I'm not sure how well the Medium Foot would hold up against, say, an army of Heavy Foot.
Would it be possible to make them more flexible by adding some heavy foot allies, or is the cost too high in terms of points?

Edited:

Here's a sample list to show you what I'm thinking.

Samnites with Etruscan allies

1 x C-in-C (Field Commander)
1 x Sub-Commander (Troop Commander)
1 x Etruscan Allied Commander (Troop Commander)

2 x BG of 4 Cavalry Each (Armored Superior Undrilled Cavalry, Light Spear Swordsmen)
3 x BG Linen Legion, 6 Each (Armored Superior Drilled Medium Foot, Impact Foot Swordsmen)
1 x BG Samnite Skirmishers, 6 Stands (Protected Average Undrilled Light Foot, Javelin Light Spearmen)
2 x BG Etruscan Mixed Foot of the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Class, 6 Stands Each (Armored Average Drilled Heavy Foot, Impact Foot Swordsmen)
1 x BG Etruscan Skirmishers, 6 Stands (Unprotected Average Undrilled Light Foot, Javelin Light Spearmen)

Works out to around 592 points.

I suppose the first order of business in expanding this would be to extend the cavalry wing somewhat.

Thanks in advance for your time. Very much appreciated.

Drilled MF has a lot of manuver advantages. Not to mention some terrain advantages.

Vs say an identical army except their foot is HF and not MF, i would say not deal killer.

The MF v HF interaction is only a problem if you lose. :)

The trick of the MF would be to manuver and then either hope to flank or at least twist the HF out of position so the MF can get more bases into the fight.

Try doing it the other way round - Etruscans with Samnite Allies.

Samnite Medium foot are all drilled, but can't be armoured. I've used Etruscan with Samnite Ally a few times. Success has been mixed, but it is fun.

Last time out I used

FC, TC, Ally TC

2x6 Etruscan Mixed Foot - HF/Arm/Dr/Ave/IF Sw
1x8 Etruscan Mixed Foot - HF/Arm/Dr/Ave/IF Sw
1x6 4th Class Foot - LF/UnProt/unDr/Poor/Sling
2x4 Etruscan Cavalry - CV/Arm/unDr/Sup/LtSp Sw
2x6 Samnite Linen Legion - MF/Prot/Dr/Sup/IF Sw
1x6 Samnite Other Foot - MF/Prot/Dr/Ave/IF Sw
1x4 Samnite Cavalry - CV/Arm/UnDr/Sup/Lt Sp Sw

Exactly 650 points, 10 BGs and PBI of +2

If you swap the Etruscan IF for Off Sp the cost is the same, and by swapping the Samnites for Umbrians or Italiot Greeks you can add in Off Sp or decent MF with Lt Sp Sw, or a lot more IF by using Hill tribes or Gauls.
