I am partnering in a campaign on the Sulla, Marius, Pontic, campaigns and intend to keep a simple blog of the campaign. lets see if manage to record all 39 turns. Anyway I am wondering how you would describe a 6 figure legionary unit would it be a cohort or a legion in campaign terms.

Surely Bttn Gun depiction will depend on scale as noted earlier. I would have thought best represented as a factor in units that have them, rather than specific bases.

Absolutely I have been waiting for Renaissance rules update since DBR fell out of use, used to be my favorite over ancients. Love FOG quite excited about this development.

I have a skirmish foot BG routing it has to pass through HF friends immediately to its rear.

LF can "pass through troops in any direction, therefore is this a burst through or an interpenetration?

Just interested in the unit sizes.

I note the veteran legionaries are 6 bases and the other legionaries 4 bases. I would have thought the vets would not be larger than the normal line? I appreciate its a matter of choice.

I also wonder if the barbarian warbands are more useful at 8's rather ...

For info yes I think i forgot the reduced dice also the skirmishers rolled good against really poor HF die rolls ...

OK my velites charge phyrric LF who evade beyond the main pike line.

The main pike line is within charge distance of velites!

I played that the velites having tested to charge continue into the main line, I also assumed that the LF evaders do not disrupt the main line I also assumed the velites ...

Is there a BT Yahoo group for FofG, I have tried a few searches yet nothing, seems strange albiet this network exists?

We also had issues with the different moves, in our case using battle lines and having mixed movement distances which ended up causing CMT's for the whole battle line as some troops were not moving their full distance (i.e. a simple advance)...

Tony and I have played a Repo Romans vs Cartaginians game, not using the starter armies, but not so different, and I found the same (being the Punic player). The Repo's are very hard frontally, especially the armoured ones.

When you start a new game system it takes time to appreciate concepts and get the correct feel or perception of the rules. Indeed if you have no source of effective feedback things will not improve. Just be patient with us newbies.

Just ensuring I understand - I am more than happy with this stance, personnally with my limited table size it makes 28mm more playable. Its also good to be able to confirm things - the guys I play with have yet to buy FofG -its a chance to clarify as much as possible before the group ...

However, I would try the game with the 1" MU first. Bear in mind (compared with DBM) we increased the length of 15mm moves - the length of 28mm moves are very similar to those in DBM. So unless you thought the 28mm moves were too short in DBM for a good game (which we didn't), they aren't too short ...

this is correct - however as you have only 2 bases you will be fighting on a 1 base frontage - so it is very hard to take the 3 hits required to loose a base from shooting or winning the close combat. As Superior/Elite armoured offensive spear you are unlikely to loose a close combat.
