Re: (Experimental archaeology) Hoplite charges, routs and pursuits

It's possible that the sources could be biased or mistranslated, or that perhaps the sources more often mentioned the unusual circumstances like a phalanx breaking just before or at contact. Maybe they liked to write about it more in a satirical manner? Archilochus (ca. 680-645 BCE) was a poet and m...

Re: Prefer to Fight on Foot

My point wasn't the cost effectiveness as much as the similar power curve where you'll usually see a good impact followed by strong melee that rapidly melts away as the melee continues. That is a good point - especially if the dismounted "convertible" (as I call the dual-mode units) MaA a...

Re: Prefer to Fight on Foot

I don’t think the comparison with Triarii is so good. These units cost 65. Triarii only cost 43 pts. In Classical, we normally play at 1600 pts in the league making Triarii more cost effective and useful. In Medieval, the armies are smaller at 1200 pts and so these Dismounted MaA are quite expensiv...

Re: (Experimental archaeology) Hoplite charges, routs and pursuits

...Not being an heavy reader about warfare, what surprised me the most is the premise of this experiment being that phalanx breaks before or at impact (that is charges without lasting melees) would represent 73% of the battles described in our sources. This link between charges and Greek hoplites i...

Re: (Experimental archaeology) Hoplite charges, routs and pursuits

Thanks for posting the video link - very interesting. I liked the first person POV footage, and the overhead drone video of the phalanxes (200 people in each one) was pretty cool. The English subtitles were accurate and I had no difficulty understanding the narration. Of course, as the narrator stat...

What specific map type is used for this matchup?

"5) Germania Superior 89 AD: Roman 24 BC-196 AD vs Roman 24 BC-196 AD with Germanic Foot Tribes 105 BC-259 AD. Open Battle. North European [blank]."

Re: Development wishlist

I think the addition of the ability to change the visible range in the game would be a great addition, if this is possible with the game engine.

Re: Why am I in the Medieval Tournament?

All of us registered in the Ancients tournament are affected similarly by the misconfigured version 1 of the tournament (incorrectly getting the Medieval armies).
Just open the game, and it will end automatically.
Then move on with life (or at least until the Slitherine IT people fix the problem) :)

Re: Late Bronze Age Tournament open for signups

The way version 1 of the tournament is going, don't be surprised if round 3 matches up the Venetian 1440 AD list with Egyptian 1276 BC allies vs. Florentines with Sea Peoples/Libyan allies fighting in Egypt circa 1208 BC... Richard, do we treat this errant game the same as the first (accept the game...

A different view of the Battle of the Granicus?

I came across this article that uses different sources for an alternative view of how the Battle of the Granicus (334 BCE) may have occurred: "The Granicus - Alexander's Conquest of Persia, Late May, 334 BCE" - Obscure Battles What do you think? Note: This isn't my website, nor do I know t...

Article on Crécy (1346)

An interesting article discussing the sociological, tactical and technological factors at the battle of Crécy: https://obscurebattles.blogspot.com/2015/03/crecy-1346.html On the website, the writer also discusses many other battles, mainly in the time period from Blenheim (1704) to Omdurman (1898), ...
