Prefer to Fight on Foot
Sorry if this has been covered but I couldn't find it. But does the classification of some Knights with the term 'Prefer to Fight on Foot' have any impact on how these troops play if they remain mounted? Or is it just a historical note about their preference?

Thanks Snuggles!
Re: Prefer to Fight on Foot
Hey, a bit off topic but can dismounted knights hold their own against other infantry units? Or their superior numbers will tip the scale eventually?
Re: Prefer to Fight on Foot
Eventually the odds will turn against the dismounted knights. I find them pretty similator to the Triarii from the FoG2 Ancients in terms of performance. It's best to match them against fragile enemies or at least have a plan for ending the melee quickly.

Re: Prefer to Fight on Foot
I don’t think the comparison with Triarii is so good.
These units cost 65. Triarii only cost 43 pts.
In Classical, we normally play at 1600 pts in the league making Triarii more cost effective and useful.
In Medieval, the armies are smaller at 1200 pts and so these Dismounted MaA are quite expensive.
Triarii have 240 men and the Dis MaA have 177 men.
Finally, in custom battles the quality is above average when dismounted. Does it change in MP?

Agree with your points regarding the cost-effectiveness of Dismounted MaA vs. Triarii.SimonLancaster wrote: ↑Tue Apr 21, 2026 5:56 pm I don’t think the comparison with Triarii is so good.

However, the "Prefer to Fight on Foot" MaA (non-mercenary) are "Superior" when on foot, and "Above Average" when mounted, in both SP and MP games.
Re: Prefer to Fight on Foot
My point wasn't the cost effectiveness as much as the similar power curve where you'll usually see a good impact followed by strong melee that rapidly melts away as the melee continues.

Re: Prefer to Fight on Foot
That is a good point - especially if the dismounted "convertible" (as I call the dual-mode units) MaA are forced to grind it out in melee against two or more opponents.
That's a situation where being of superior fighting quality becomes less of a factor when you're being ganged up on by multiple opponents who are not complete idiots.
Which is why I laugh at cheesy martial-arts movies where the cannon-fodder bad guys go up against the hero one-by-one

Re: Prefer to Fight on Foot
In many cases, you can buy dismounted knights if that's what you want to field, rather than spend points on a mounted unit that dismounts smaller.
I suppose when you don't have that option, or a suitable foot alternative, there may arise the rare situation where you may feel it is a valuable option, such as facing a list with elephants, perhaps.
