Thanks, Nik! I was mostly guided by the wording in the rules- so spearmen seemed to be more of densely packed troops. Classification as spearmen actually makes them quite resistant to cavalry in the open... I wonder if Ikko-Ikki is classified as superior mob, with heavy weapons or spearmen and some ...

Thanks, Richard! I was not sure if you decided to cram all into one list or indeed separate Ivan - Mikhail from Alexei... There should be some odds and ends- western style reiters, dragoons and even possibly some wacky Zhiltzy ( if at all)- but these should be in small numbers- 4 base BGs. Intereste...

Japanese list is a bit of a conundrum- BUT we can follow troop and weapon classifications and pick up some clues. It seems that Samurai and yari armed ashigaru should be classified as warriors- since they do not qualify as medium or heavy foot. It is possible to see samurai as warriors, superior, he...

Well, in my calculation streltsy of the earlier period-Ivan IV- should be MF, unarmored, average, arquebus, H weapon. At that period they were lacking pike BUT had a use of Gulai-Gorod- portable defenses. In the later period ( Alexei Mikhailovich) they should swap arquebus with musket, drop Gilai-Go...

@ Ghaznavid Nobody disputes here the small numbers of participants in both of the battles. However their importance for both "Crusaders" and Russians should not be underestimated- especially at the time of Mongol Invasion of Kievan Rus. By denigrating these events Osprey and FoG is falling...

Oath of fialty lists comments

In both Early medieval Russian and Early Teutonic lists it is stated by book authors that battle on Neva river and Lake Peipus were hardly "battles", but rather insignificant skirmishes, blown out of proportion by later propaganda. I'd like to know what is that statement based on ( biblio)...

Mmmm, not sure here. DBX has Ikko Ikki in the Samurai lists- treat them as Horde. Not sure if list designers in AoW will treat them as anything more substantial...?

Well, I will try to explain without slagging off on WAB :D Generally, sets of rules like DBX, Warrior, Piquet and others have more unpredictability compared to WAB. As is in WAB: " I am general, I can miove troops where I want and how I want". other game sistems are more taking in account ...

Maybe an idea for game designer would be to print some counters on harder paper, so people can try the game without spending money on figs. We did it with some games- just counters with troop type written on it- 2 different colours. It helps to try the game mechanics and just see what the game is al...

Flames of War ( sorry for mentioning WWII game) is using both measuring systems for movement and shooting. Ie ,when mentioned certain gun shoots x"/equivalent cm. Since most of tape rulers (US)are one sided inch/ other mm, pretty easy to use. Maybe AoW take that "innovation" from FoW....

Usually games do give a "scale" ratio- I know Warrior and DBM do, however I do not remember exact numbers off hand. But they are pretty accurate in relationship to tabletop area and figs. It is hard to repeat a historical battle exactly, since number accounts do vary greatly from one chron...

Well, this is the usual lamentations out of some gamers. IMHO, it is an absolute nonsence. Historically successful armies , well crafted and under good generalship are absolutely deadly in gaming. Even against a bow heavy army , Light horse army could be very successful, if used well. I have seen Ma...

Yep, I played last year at Historicon- DBM theme with my Teutonic knights ( converted from WFB Bretonnians) vs true 25mm Late Polish. Ouch! Gives a new meaning to Knight Superior! 40mm figs ( and rather large Redoubt figs) look just fine, but maybe a better use in skirmish type games??? Redoub...

I wonder how do you play other opponents with 25/28mm figs with your 1/72s- difference in scale must be very visible.

I posted the topic not due to unhappiness with certain rule set, but more in attempt to understand how the new one will look like. Clearly there is no perfect set of rules, and more likely there will never be one. People will be always unhappy with this or that in the rules they play. Personally I a...
