weird intercept situation

Cant work out how this one should work out

aabbb
--11
1 charges b with a slight wheel
a then intercepts 1 as the wheel moves the rear corner of 1 in front of a
so for the intercept a moves forwards, now 1 can't wheel because a is in the way, but if 1 cant wheel a can't intercept.

You declared your charge direction by laying down a measuring stick that should make it easy to move AA so it crosses 11's charge path to contact. The interception can go up to the limit of the interception zone. You will hit the interceptors when you do your charge move. See p63 for specifics.

An interception can't contact the intercepted BG - unless as a legal flank/rear charge.
Thus the sequence is

Declare the path for 1
Move a straight forward so that it is at least partly blocking the path, and not contacting 1
Move 1 along the declared path untill it hits a - then do any stepping forward.

so effectively 1 contacts a front corner of a with a side edge?

Hi Paul. I'm not sure the description is clear, but I've found the bit in the rules which means the interception could not happen.

We had a battle group that charged bbb, and due to circumstances the charge was straight ahead for most of the charge (and not through the ZOI of aaa), with a slight wheel at the end. It is this wheel right at the end that took the very back corner of the back/left most element just into the ZOI of the aaa.

The bit in the rules which prevents the interception from stopping the charge is on p.63:

"It must either:
-Cross the path of the charging battle group. Interceptors move before chargers."

Due to the angle of the charge aaa moving forward 2" never actually crossed the path of the charge, so even though 111 crosses the ZOI there is no valid interception for aaa to make. You cannot make an interception even though you might physically get in the way (of the final wheel bit).

By my understanding a has crossed the path of 1's charge - specifically it has crossed the path of 1's rear corner.

There are however side effects - 1's contact on a is not "legal charge contact", and will not initiate combat. In fact is 1 can't step forward into b its charge is cancelled as it can't legally contact enemy.

This all hangs on the interpretation of "path of the charge".

Bruce is, I think, going with a common sense definition of this as being the "path that the front of the charging battle group moves through."

I agree with him.

The path of a charge is the rectangle followed by the front edge of a charging BG.

We use the same common sense version for evades wen deciding if all evaders have evaded out of the path of the charge.

An intercept needs to block the front edge of chargers some how to interfere with their charge (unless charging from flank or rear of course).
