I recommend two hexes distance free of enemy ground units around an airfield to declare it safe for the AI. An additional check if a hangar was attacked (e.g. by arty or bomber) could also help to declare the airfield unsafe to prevent such horrible mistakes.

Total AI Failure
This brain bug really deserves its own topic. The AI should never ever land aircraft next to player units. In my example, it's even more extreme as I let the AI capture my airfield where my other units have their defensive positions next to it. Thanks for the easy aircraft kills, Mr. Brain Bug!

Sometime I'd even deliberately avoid capturing enemy airfield-hexes to exploit this behaviour. It's wrong and should be changed. I'd recommend an even higher hex-range check (4-5) and some encirclement/supply-loss check.
But however the final implementation, I'd also suggest to change this AI behaviour.

Strangely, the AI is very apt when bombarding my planes' hangars when I land them too close to the front. Oh well...GabeKnight wrote:++1

Also, sometimes the AI impales itself on my wall of Stugs. Fun to watch.

That, on the other hand, I'm embracing. Player's mistakes should be punished on the spot...Andy2012 wrote: Strangely, the AI is very apt when bombarding my planes' hangars when I land them too close to the front. Oh well...

Re: Total AI Failure
To avoid this situation, I place airport at a certain distance of the objectives and rather in the edges of the map in my scenarios.
