The buttons are a bit messed up but i got a bit usd to them.
To anyone who's played any of Slitherines TB strategy titles(Legion, Chariots of War, Spartan) the buttons are nearly identical. Guess it all depends on what your used to.
Alot of the time after a combat a unit stops still as if resting. Where is the realism in that. Soldiers get adrenalin rush's too so they could move for an hour(not 30 seconds).
If they made it so units engaged on their own then you'd have a lot of people complaining about the dumb things the AI was doing with their troops. Missile units USUALLY engage any target in range if their first breaks. I've only played Shogun TW but the troops in it don't automatically go after everything on the map either.
Inf don't hold long enough and Cav don't even seem to have a charge value.
The infantry you start with are pretty weak don't expect great things from them. As already mentioned cavalry has a chance to "trample", and it's a yellow horseshoe not a spur:)
Map looks nice but I found absolutly no choice on the "campaign".
Campaign is completely linear. 68 Roman battles and 40 or 41 Celtic. Replay value in SP comes from trying different army/equipment and tactics. Or of course playing online.
It seems like the general can last against 40 inf for over a minute but 60 inf cannot.
The starting enemy infantry are also weak. They simply don't do enough damage to pierce the generals armor. But you'll also notice you don't earn any XP for them.
For what it's worth Normal=Easy and Hard=Normal difficulty. On Slitherines Normal the enemy has their hit chance and health reduced by 25%. On Hard it's even money. On Very Hard they have their hit chance doubled and health increased by 50%.
As for the history keep in mind this game covers a very large time period. What most of us consider the typical Roman legion didn't come about until around 107BC when Marius reformed the legions. This was when each legionary got the 60lb load, including 3 days rations and the nickname Marius's Mules, in an effort to reduce the baggage train. This also when the legions started open recruitment. Prior to that in the Rupulic only land owning citizens could be in the army.
