Played the demo..

Post by mob »

Since RTWs chat was taken away I have been looking for a new multiplayer game to play.

This looked OK until i played it. The buttons are a bit messed up but i got a bit usd to them.

Alot of the time after a combat a unit stops still as if resting. Where is the realism in that. Soldiers get adrenalin rush's too so they could move for an hour(not 30 seconds).

Inf don't hold long enough and Cav don't even seem to have a charge value.

Units seem a bit small but are ok if the other points were good.

Map looks nice but I found absolutly no choice on the "campaign".

It seems like the general can last against 40 inf for over a minute but 60 inf cannot.

Seems like theres alot of things needs fixing. Can anyone tell me if any of these have been fixed?

Sorry for the bitchy post but at least its contsructive critisism

Having said all that it looks like the moral system is good if you just change some things and make combat with inf longer.

You can upgrade them later...in the full game campaign

False. you've got a lot of choices. ??Upgrade your militia or save the money for another auxilia unit? ??When will I meet those elephants? ??Am I skilled enough? ??Heavy infantry or light infantry with better armor? ??Archers or skirmishers? You don't know what are you going to meet next. You don't make the choices in the campaign map (where to go next, i mean), you make the choices in the unit screen. Different type of choice, but choice anyway. Your choice.

That's partially true...for the first couple of scenarios. You'll get 60 or more for the romans. People are having trouble levelling up the legate...The infantry men will last longer when they raise their moral: a 35-level triarii is amazing!

The post is allright, don't worry  , we've seen worse things  Welcome to the forums

Your friendliness is amazing lol. You don't see that from Creative Assembly. The would probably delete it :) .

Ok so theres limited campaign :D cause you can choose what city's etc to take in Rome. Same with Imperial Glory but thats limited

Roman legions held closer to each other...maybe that was right I only played a few mins ago but I forgot lol.

Can I ask what multiplayer is like? Are there clan tourny's etc. (don't mind if theres no prizes) Is the set up good cause that is an important issue.

On top of this, try playing at a difficulty harder than normal. At hardest, your troops are hard presed to stand against anything. And troops did not tend to charge across the battlefield into another battle, while burdened with equipment and such. Try doing that while carrying about 30 pounds of war gerar- it was actually more in many cases- and running-at the same speed as a bunch of other men- at an enemy half a kilometer away.

I think that unless asked, you would stop, take a breather, and avoid getting limbs chopped off. Your troops will only carry into other troops if there is a reason for them to do so. And adrenain rushes do not last for hours, trust me on this. They last for a few minutes tops, like most other drug highs. Adrenalin IS a drug, you know. And fighting is some of the hardest work out there.

Also, in the harder difficulty levels infantry last far longer.

Try playing at hardest. It fixes the things you have been asking about. Or better yet, get the game and try multiplayer.

The charge value is called trample.

He'd better avoid you, you have an impressive record (if victories and defeats have not exhanged their usual places)

Glad I don't have internet

About multiplayer, I only play single due to this "lack of internet" (which I intend to fix soon, as soon as I move to my new house), but I found the game interesting enough to beat the two campaigns (romans and gauls) twice, even though it's not my type of game ( i come from Civ type of TBS games)

Ok..
1) They carried the 30KG everyday of there army lives, which was years in most cases.

2)It was only half a kilometre if there were the realistice 5,000 per legion that there was back then. But that always meant that there was someother unit within metres of you anyway.

I think that unless asked, you would stop, take a breather, and avoid getting limbs chopped off.
If I was general I would have them berched. Any good general would have a high standard of disaplin in his army and they would rightly fear taking a breather unless given permission. They didnt make choices on the field, well thats wrong they decided when to put their shield up and block and when to swipe and what way to breath that was about it.

thanks but It didnt really show it when i flanked with cav and charged in. Alot should have died immediatly but it was light cav so I will give them the benifit of the doubt

Or better yet, get the game and try multiplayer
Most likely will do m8, thanks 8)

Trample is represented by a (golden) spur in the battle map. But you have to give your unit the upgrade first. Get "master trample" skill (about level 18 or so; Spedius will know better) and you'll see lethal charges by your (heavy or light) cavalry, specially against archers...

Personally, if a unit of mine charged out of formation to attack somebody else, I would have them beat. I dont want my units taking any initiative beyond that which is strictly needed for self-preservation- it would foul my battle line. And I play celts. If you want them to attack, all well and good. Order them to do so. Wanting your troops to attack on their own can be done by hitting "Charge". It also makes them really easy to maipulate. Do you really want half your army charging after a unit of militia in a swamp?

Resting

Post by honvedseg »

A decent chain mail shirt might weigh 20 to 30 lbs. by itself, and if you add the other gear, 30 Kg (65 lbs.) would not be out of line. Try running around and doing excercises for 10 minutes or so with 65 lbs. strapped to you.

The battle line was not lightly abandoned by a subordinate commander. Moving your unit out of the line was a serious risk to your career and life, so I have no problem with units not wanting to march around without orders. Most of the men also had other priorities than putting their precious skins back into the meat grinder, and would probably not have gone out of their way to engage any opponent that wasn't directly threatening them, without orders. A few battles were influenced in the past because some lower ranking officer took a risk, but those are the exceptions that became famous, not the norm.

The Legate or other officer would not last long in combat against an entire opposing unit of anything better than untrained peasants, and should probably not be sent into the thick of things in any kind of accurate simulation of that time period. On the other hand, it would make for a much duller game. Slitherine seems to have compromised between historical accuracy and game play, which I can live with. Just consider that the general figure represents the leader himself, plus his personal bodyguards, and it makes more sense.

Yes, I believe the units of around 24 - 48 guys are supposed to represent at least a cohort (480? men for the roman infantry).

As for trampling, the units won't go flying like in RTW, but you will see alot of horseshoes sometimes.

Resting units, for me, is more than just a "I don't want to go there" from the troops. Often, when I don't have enough command pionts, it is wonderful that I don't need to waste to ordering my legions NOT to suicide. Plus, if they are just sitting there, I believe you can order a charge and they will attack all-out.

Finally, I like the game for one all-important reason. The added realism and strategy due to the limited command system. It is so much more interesting when everything rests on your timing and forethought, rather than a responsive mouse.

The buttons are a bit messed up but i got a bit usd to them.
To anyone who's played any of Slitherines TB strategy titles(Legion, Chariots of War, Spartan) the buttons are nearly identical. Guess it all depends on what your used to.
Alot of the time after a combat a unit stops still as if resting. Where is the realism in that. Soldiers get adrenalin rush's too so they could move for an hour(not 30 seconds).
If they made it so units engaged on their own then you'd have a lot of people complaining about the dumb things the AI was doing with their troops. Missile units USUALLY engage any target in range if their first breaks. I've only played Shogun TW but the troops in it don't automatically go after everything on the map either.

Inf don't hold long enough and Cav don't even seem to have a charge value.
The infantry you start with are pretty weak don't expect great things from them. As already mentioned cavalry has a chance to "trample", and it's a yellow horseshoe not a spur:)
Map looks nice but I found absolutly no choice on the "campaign".
Campaign is completely linear. 68 Roman battles and 40 or 41 Celtic. Replay value in SP comes from trying different army/equipment and tactics. Or of course playing online.
It seems like the general can last against 40 inf for over a minute but 60 inf cannot.
The starting enemy infantry are also weak. They simply don't do enough damage to pierce the generals armor. But you'll also notice you don't earn any XP for them.

For what it's worth Normal=Easy and Hard=Normal difficulty. On Slitherines Normal the enemy has their hit chance and health reduced by 25%. On Hard it's even money. On Very Hard they have their hit chance doubled and health increased by 50%.

As for the history keep in mind this game covers a very large time period. What most of us consider the typical Roman legion didn't come about until around 107BC when Marius reformed the legions. This was when each legionary got the 60lb load, including 3 days rations and the nickname Marius's Mules, in an effort to reduce the baggage train. This also when the legions started open recruitment. Prior to that in the Rupulic only land owning citizens could be in the army.

Cavalry with officers(junior NCOs, Senior NCOs, junior Officers, senior Officers) is tend to be aggressive, and charging against enemy troops
without player's orders. This is just what I guess, though not so sure.

In Demo campaign, it's hard to raise your army as you like, because there are only 5 maps in it.
But in full campaign, there are around 60 maps in Roman campaign, so one can earn lots of denarii and EXPs.
And if above guess is not right, with several good heavy cavalry units, one can get initiative, can choose which enemy units to be destroyed first,
so it's relatively stressless.
Cavlry heavy army with officers skill is worth try, at least.

#Though there are several maps which heavy infantry is much in need. But once managed to through those maps, thing go well.
