Well, that is the beauty of such a button, you don't have to use it. It's not mandatory, but just an extra option. I can see myself using it under certain circumstances. For example when I am very low on prestige while having a big core. Or in GC West during the scenarios where a lot of (Italian) auxiliaries have to be strengthened and deployed. Pick some units and manually give them Elite Reinforcements, than press the 'Reinforce all' button for the rest.
The only trouble I see is that is won't be compatible with the current prestige sytem, because modders can specify that Green Reinforcements cost prestige as well. So it would have to be disabled or give a warning when Green Reinforcements aren't free.
This debate reminds me less of standard/auto gearboxes but more of Heroes of Might & Magic 4 (HoMM4) vs. HoMM3. In HoMM3, I frequently wished there was a button to 'buy all' available troops in a city, instead of manually going through the seven separate purchase screens. Then, in HoMM4 they finally gave the player this button but I barely used it because they also made sure players generally had much less money. But I still liked this button, as it was just an extra option besides the normal purchase system.
