Unit Toolbox Mod

Post by Stormchaser »

The Unit Toolbox is a unit overhaul mod I've been working on for some time with the help of Tassadar and R2G2.
The goal of this mod is to ultimately expand upon the unit lists of every nation in the game that participated in WW2, for use both by players and by custom Scenario and Campaign creators.

This is likely going to be a work in progress for the foreseeable future, as it took quite a bit of time just to get Germany and the Condor Legion's unit rosters filled out and working properly.

Balance is also likely skewed in various ways, as 3 people can only playtest so much on their own, especially with only 1 Faction currently implementing these changes. If you notice units seeming too strong or too weak, feel free to mention it. Continuing that train of thought, feel free to offer opinions and ideas for the Mod, but be aware that suggesting something doesn't necessarily mean we will implement it. On the other hand, nothing stops you from downloading this mod and modding it to your own liking.

A Steam version of the mod is planned, but likely won't be made until the rest of the majors are worked on, at minimum.

You will likely note that equipment such as the Neubaufahrzeug and Sturer Emil that in the base game are only available through special events are now available in the shop, alongside a number of new prototype designs such as the VK 1602 Leopard and Bf 109TL. This is for playtesting purposes, and many of these 'Wunderwaffe' designs will be given the NoPurchase Trait in later builds as they are primarily meant for use in Custom Campaign designs as new options for Event rewards. They do only have a 3 month window of availability in the shop, to still denote that they are, in fact, prototype designs that never actually made it into full production.

Unit models will be picked from existing models on a mixture of best fit while also trying to differentiate one design from another as applicable. While I would love to implement custom models. especially for more unique additions like the BV 141, I have no 3D modelling experience or skill and I'm pretty sure there currently is no way to mod in new unit models. Recommendations for better fitting models are welcomed.

Rough Plan of Order of Implementation
1. Soviet Union
2. Italy and Spain
3. Britain and Commonwealth
4. The Frances
5. Minor Nations
USA, Japan, and any added Pacific minor nations will be slotted into the lineup after Pacific's release.

Version 0.1.9 'Warsaw'

(24.1 KiB) Downloaded 568 times
Version Changelogs:
0.1.9: Polish list and partial Soviet list (Infantry+Tanks) added. General Prestige and Slot cost rebalance. Fixed AA fire not working bug.
0.1.1: Gave the He 70 Blitz Ammo higher than 0, so it can actually attack.
0.1: Germany+Condor Legion lists added.
Installation: Download the RAR file, and extract the Mod to Documents/My Games/Panzer Corps 2/Mods.

General Changelog:
Extensive Prestige Cost and Slot Size rebalancing.

New types of equipment available:
  • Airborne Equipment: Towed guns, as well as a few tanks, designed to be deployed from aircraft alongside paratroopers.
  • Amphibious Vehicles: Unfortunately, seeing as the actual in game Amphibious Trait doesn’t seem to work, these vehicles were only given the River Assault Trait to negate combat penalties from being on a minor river. Did not give BridgeEngineer in order to prevent abuse and to distinguish Amphibious Tanks from Bridgelayer Tanks.
  • Command Vehicles are support units, sometimes with no gun/a dummy gun, that trade Overrun for the Leadership and Aiming Assistance Traits. In addition, they have a base Strength of 5 with a modified Slot Cost that should make an Overstrengthed to 10 version cost more slots than regular tanks. Both of these last changes (Plus the lack of Overrun) are intended to prevent players from using purely Command Tanks (The ones with actual guns) instead of their regular versions.
  • Infantry Guns: Artillery pieces used mostly for direct fire missions to increase the firepower of infantry units. WW2 was their last hurrah as their role was replaced by armored vehicles, mortars, and portable explosive launchers (grenade launchers, shoulder-launched missiles, etc.). Placed under AT tab instead of Artillery tab since they function very similarly, save for inverted offensive values.
  • Mountain Guns: Towed guns designed for use in mountainous terrain, thus given the Alpine Trait.
Recon Aircraft split into 3 types:
  • Recon Planes which are unarmed but have increased range and spotting, while also receiving the Double Move Trait to give more opportunities for them to apply their recon buff to a target and/or make more use out of their increased movement.
  • Recon Fighter and Recon Bombers don’t get the increased reconnaissance abilities of Recon Planes, but are able to engage and attack either other planes or ground targets, depending on if they are a Recon Fighter or Recon Bomber, albeit at reduced effectiveness compared to actual Fighters and Bombers.
Heavy Infantry can now change between their normal stats and a new Mortar mode, allowing them to provide limited Artillery support. They have been made more expensive as a result.

Light AT guns and AA guns (less than 5cm) have been given Forced March, and light AT guns also get Close Fighter. This is to give them additional tactical advantages over larger AT and AA guns.

Entrenchment Killer Trait upgraded to stronger versions on larger/later Artillery and Strategic Bombers.

Tankettes have been given the Evasive Trait as a way to provide some useful utility compared to the often superior Light Tanks.

Tanks with multiple guns have been given the Rapid Fire 1.5x Trait to represent said multiple guns. This change was inspired by the Neubaufahrzeug, and affects both multi-turret tanks like the T-28 and Char 2C, and Tanks with a forward mounted main gun plus a smaller turreted gun like the M3 Lee and Char 1B.

Nation Changelogs
Germany+Condor Legion
Poland+Soviet Union (SU Infantry and Tanks only atm)

What an awesome mod... including this in Storm over Europe would be absolutely awesome. Though it seems they are already compatible, just started a new game and the new units show up.

I just checked myself, same issue. The He 70 is the only Recon aircraft not acting like it should. I'll do some testing and try to figure out what's wrong.

Update: Found the problem. Forgot to give the He 70 an Ammo count greater than 0.

A few things I noticed while scrolling through the units...
- its named "Light Infanterie", I think I should be "Leichte Infanterie" as all other names are German
- the Panzer IIJ is insane. IIRC it had the same armor as any Panzer II except a small 80mm front plate. Armor 20 (combined with move 5) is way too much, thats more than Char or KV1/40. And I thinks its more tank than recon.
- I think the best model for the superheavy arty is the one on the 24cm K3, maybe change the H39 and K(t) to this model
- some Marders look a bit weird given that they all have more or less the same caliber gun. Maybe swap out the -IF and -IL for the -IIF or -IH model
- Flakpanzer I gun is way too big for 20mm

Only my personal opinion, as said above awesome mod

Renaming Light Infanterie to Leichte Infanterie makes sense, will do so for next update.

I'll play around with the Panzer IIJ some more, the goal was to make a heavily armored Recon since it's only real trait of note was that heavy front armor, and several later German Recon units already get 18 Ground Defense anyway. It does have 1 less Movement than every other Recon Panzer II, and it's Firepower is less than that of the Panzer IIL that becomes available only a few months later let alone even later models, but I might reduce Movement to 4 as well so there is even more of a tradeoff... As for classification, from what I've read the IIJ really was classified as a heavy reconnaissance vehicle.

Models are going to be models.
For the Marder Is and Flakpanzer I, I elected to focus more on how the superstructure matched as opposed to size of the model's gun.
And as for the Superheavy Artillery, most of the pictres I could find for them had guns mounted on 6 or 8 wheeled chassis. So I went with guns that had 6/8-wheeled chassis. In addition, there was an element of trying to not rely on a single model for every single German Artillery piece 17cm or higher.

Its really sad that its so complicated / almost impossible to mod new models in the game...

Two more things, I promise, the last ones ;-)

- The Focke-Wulf fighter bombers have imho too high anti-tank values (10 and 12). Its the same (12) as the Hs129 (with her 75mm cannon) or Ju87D and the FW only had small bombs and cannons.
- I am really happy to see the 8,8 FlaK auf Selbstfahrlafette but why an armor value of 20? Its an open vehicle with 15mm armor at best. All similar units have value 9. Or does this represent the ability to fire beyond the range of enemy tanks? Makes it almost invulnerable to artillery though.

Funnily enough, all of these units were already in the game, and while I tweaked a few of them a bit these stats weren't modified. Likely going to take it into account for future updates though.

As far as I'm aware, attack animations are tied to the unit model, and recon aircraft couldn't attack or even defend themselves in the base game, so those models don't have attack animations. A shame, but what can you do?

And the Fw 189's whole gimmick when added with one of the Axis Operations DLC was that it was a recon plane that could fight, to quote the dev diary that revealed the impending inclusion of the 189:
The FW-189 served extensively on the Eastern Front and was known for being very difficult to shoot down thanks to its extreme manoeuvrability. And unlike other recon type aircraft that are completely unarmed, the FW-189 has some limited armament that it can fight with as well.

Maybe we can figure this out. I only did modding on PzC1 so im not really sure how this works now.
I looked at the Uhu (D:\SteamLibrary\steamapps\common\Panzer Corps 2\PanzerCorps2\Content\Graphics\Units\DE\Fw189A1), it has the machinegun.uasset and the machinegun.uexp for its animation. The He 70 (D:\SteamLibrary\steamapps\common\Panzer Corps 2\PanzerCorps2\Content\Graphics\Units\CL\He70) is missing these files. I tried copy and rename accordingly but it didnt work. Iirc in PzC 1 you had to add it in one more file but I dont know how it works here.... any ideas?
Maybe changes in the equipment.pzeqp?

As far as i'm aware, the equipment.pzeqp file is to use all those units in the editor. And there is a problem with graphics and animations right now. We will need to wait for the full modding tools to add all that stuff.
BTW: im working on adding the Unit Toolbox mod to Storm Over Europe main directory, so both mods work together to avoid any compatibility issues :). I will check if i can add the animation to the He70

Nope i couldn't make it work, so we will need to wait to implement the animations. Also it may gonna take some days because i had to set up everything properly to have no purchase traits in order to use them as prototypes :)

I assume you mean Prototypes for Commendation Rewards?

Out of curiosity, what are some of the initial ones you are planning to give out as rewards?
