Brandenburg retained for the Protestant cause; GentlemanRanker’s German Protestant 1639-1648 army beat SpeedyCM’s German Catholic 1639-1648 force, by 58-22.

The Protestant army deployed a defensive infantry line, anchored on a wood on the left wing, with most of the cavalry and a strong infantry support aiming to extend the right flank, and attempt an envelopment. The Catholic cavalry was evenly divided between the wings, with the infantry formed in a deep column of attack in the centre.

The Protestants cautiously extended their right, as the Catholic cavalry fell back, while the Catholics executed a strong weighted attack on the left of the Protestant infantry line, probing ways to get around the wood on Protestant’s left flank. In the centre, the refused left flank of the Catholic infantry column faced off against the enveloping Protestant infantry.

The numerically superior Protestant cavalry had much the better on the encounter on their right wing; while the Catholic attack on the Protestant left was a total success, smashing through, and rolling up the Protestant line. The game was won in the centre, when the victorious Protestant cavalry began to pursue behind the Catholic infantry and supporting cavalry, and find flanks.

We often comment in these reports as to how the final score does not reflect the experience of the playing the game, and that is certainly true in this case. Nothing I could do was able to stem the juggernaut of the victorious Catholic attack on my left wing; it was just a question of trying to cling on long enough to prevail elsewhere on the battlefield. The game was absolutely neck and neck until the final couple of turns, when the Protestant cavalry got behind the Catholic centre, and began to really ramp up the score. GG, very well played by SpeedyCM.

In the year 1648, a treaty is drawn up in Westphalia establishing the Religious mark-up of Germany, with Austria, Bavaria and Brandenburg being officially Protestant, while Bohemia, Palatinate and Saxony are to remain Catholic.

This has permanently weakened the Empire. Germany will be splintered for several hundred years, the lack of unity makes it unable to stand united against its neighbours and Germany will remain an economic and technological backwater.

This suits France and the Scandinavian countries as well as Poland and Russia.
