date for turcoman with a fez thingy

Post by expendablecinc »

I see a few turcoman LH figs have a fez like hat on while other intire ranges are more barbaric looking. both essex and legio heroica have the fez. Is this appropriate for the turcoman for the Byzantine period eg khurasanian lists?the medieval lists or really a ww1 thing

The fez is 16th c Ottoman for its earliest military wear.

You want generic Turkic style heads. eg. some with long hair (emulating much earlier Turks), helmets (not that common for Turcoman), head cloths (real turbans are later), hald shaved heads (turko-mongol tribal styles), caps, the odd Scythian style pointy hat etc...

Damn! both the ranges mine have come form make use of the Fez (Essex and AB). I had thought about it but never really thought to push th matter as they are armed and equiped the same as the rest of the turcoman they came with.

As long as you don't paint the 'fez' red, who's going to notice.... :-)

Actually, Ian Heath's Armies & Enemies of the Crusades has a Turcoman Tribesman #52 (pg 89-90) wearing a tall Black Fez made of felt ot fur based on the 14th C. drawings of Ustad Mehmed Siyah Qalem
