boots593 wrote:I have 1GB of RAM. You are probably right. I have played the demo for Commander Europe at War ok, so I thought this would be no different. I also have ended as many processes as possible before opening the game, but the same result every time. This is also happening with Naploeon at War. I've even downloaded the demo again to compare. I have numerous games that I currently run ok where 1GB is recommended. That is why I'm at a loss with these 2 games. Is there anything else that you can suggest? If there are no other solutions possible, I have 2 games that I can't use that I resently purchased from the Slitherine site. Thanks for everyone's responses.
Try to set

NO_SOUND 1

in the Documents/CNAW/settings.txt
or Documents/CEAW/settings.txt
or Documents/CEAW Fast Play/settings.txt

Furthermore, you should have a error.txt file in the path where you installed Commander, typically
"C:\Program Files\Slitherine\Commander - Europe At War"
or
"C:\Program Files\Slitherine\Military History Commander - Europe at War GOLD"
pls mail that error.log file to me firepowerjohan@gmail.com that file could be EXTREMELY useful for us pinning down if this is a memory issue or not.

by the way, where did you install the commander games can you mention their full paths pls?

I installed both games to their install path (except to "G" drive instead of "C"). G:\Program Files\Slitherine\Military History Commander - Europe at War GOLD I did reinstall to C drive...but it's the same. G:\Program Files\Slitherine\Commander - Napoleon at War. I did try the no sound, low CPU fast play and window mode as well. I tried various combinations.
The java fix won't recognize the install path with (...\Slitherine\... GOLD) in it. And it won't let you browse to find the correct install folder. I'll try the demo and reinstall both games again. FYI, There was no "Commander.exe" located in the folder. Unless it is titled under the java.exe file? I'll look for the error.txt.

When you say the java fix wont let you install to the correct path - I think it is just a zip file so you have to manually navigate to the folder?

@boots:

A typo, should of course be no exe if you bought the Military History version or Napoleon at War.
The 1.12 patch is just a zip as Iain said, what patch did you try can you give me a link to it?

Did you try running without sound and without music, can be set in the settings.txt

NO_SOUND_EFFECTS 1
NO_MUSIC 1

I've installed the 1.6 demo version, along with both games. I also ended as many processes as (safely) allowed, but I'm having the same results.
I've changed the sound, music, and window mode as suggested back & forth, trying different combinations as well. Chose low CPU, fast play, all combos.
I did not find any "error.txt" file in any of the folders to send to you.
The only thing that I noticed with CNAW was the dos box that opens at first had several command lines which stated something about loading and about skipping. I couldn't exactly catch its complete lines.
The 1.12 patch was downloaded from the Patch Scrolls site. I had to manually update the files.

In reference to the java fix update, it wanted to install to C:Program Files\Commander-Europe at War. When I tried to change the path to where the game was installed (for GOLD), it gave an error box stating it couldn't recognize or find the reference file to complete the install.

I'm starting to believe that some issues may be a Ram issue, but it doesn't make sense with some of the other games that run. I've recently played the Men at War demo, which is the limit in RAM for my system. I'm have not had issues as this before. I appreciate your help, but please let me know what can be done. I can't utilize these games. Could someone from Slitherine contact me via email? I am regestered there. Thanks again for your help.

Boots if you are unable to copy the files from the Vista fix zip file to your Program files folder then you've not had a chance to see if the fix works. Here are possible causes I can think of
1) The zip is corrupt and need to redownload
2) There is a hard disk error and the install path for the game has some bad sectors you cannot write to. Maybe scan the disk and see what it says.
3) The files are write protected and you cannot overwrite them. You may need admin privaleges or to change the files settings from read only to writeable.

We need to sort this out before you can even test if the Vista fix helps. These are all windowsy things unrelated to the game so once you can actually copy the fix to the game dir let us know how it goes.

I have XP operating system, with Admin privy. There are no bad sectors, I ran a disk optimization on June 11th, and defrag 2 days ago. It didn't need to defrag, as it was at 9%. Is the java fix for Vista or XP? What other locations have you uploaded the Java fix patch files, since you think it may have been corrupted? Thanks.

No the patch is not corrupted but it may have been corrupted on download so try downloadaing again - we know because many others have downloaded the file fine. It was intended for Vista but XP has been going teh same way as Vista so may help for that too. If you cannot extract the files from the patch zip I dont know how we can help - this is a problem with the zip program on your machine. Until you solve this I don't know what to suggest. What is the exact error message you get when trying to do it? The java fix is a zip, not an installer so it cannot ask you for an install path so it seems you've got something mixed up? Are you trying to install a patch from the Slitherine fversion on to the Matrix version or vice versa?

Hi,

I bought "Military History Commander - Europe at War GOLD" today and I'm having roughly the same problems as described in this thread. I've also tried each one of the suggestions posted, with no results. Let me summarize:

- when I click on the desktop link I get asked to "Pick Game" and about "Graphics Quality". Whatever choices I make don't seem to affect the outcome
- the intro plays through OK in full screen (or is interrupted via ESC, no matter)
- when the intro is over, some music is played, and sometime you can see something starting to appear in the taskbar, but the game doesn't start (and there's nothing in the taskbar eventually)
- I'm left with a java.exe process that I have to kill in the task manager. No error.txt file is to be found anywhere.

So, no clues on my side.. it's a laptop (HP nw8240, 1920x1200) and I tried everything I could think of wrt/ graphics setup (screen size, refresh rate, made sure secondary display is disabled). I'm running a fully patched winxp, with fresh Java.

Anything else I could try?

Thanks,

tom

Yes. There seems to be no difference whatever I do. I don't even get to the DOS prompt. The CEAW directory in My Documents gets created, but there's no settings.txt nor error.log in it.
