I put it to window_mode 1 and it still crashes

Issues with Commander EaW and Nap downloads

Post by crashcop »

I have the same problems with both games that I purchased via Slitherine (downloads). Both hang-up at the loading screen. When trying to get out thru taskmanager, there is no "application" to end, it's blank. When I go to the to the process tab I have to end the java exe to return to Windows. I've read the other posts, where I changed the Window Mode to 1, tried the java hotfix...but that wouldn't allow me to install it to the folder where the game is installed. It seems to not recognize the full name path of the GOLD version. It also hangs up when you click the "browse" button to change the path.
Last week was my first time ordering thru Slitherine and I feel that I am out $50 for both games. I've tried all the previously posted suggestions, but without any success. Please help, or refund. I want to keep the faith. Thanks

so no doubt you are running a laptop without the native screen resolution required?

Sorry you are having problems. Can you tell us your machine specs and operating system. Also your monitor specs as the game requires a monitor spec of 1024x768.

Issues with Commander EaW and Nap downloads

Post by crashcop »

Desktop PC, Windows XP Home, P4 2Ghz, 1 GB RAM, Radeon 9550/256mb video card. The demo worked months ago, but it has been uninstalled for a while now.
I typed the command line into the NaW as was suggested on its forum. It still hung up at the loading screen, but it did show up in the "applications" not responding, this time in taskmanager. I also stopped as many background processes as I could to run both, but it still hung up in the same manner. I even gave it an exception with the antivirus software.
Still no application shows up in taskmanager for CEaW when it hangs-up at the loading screen. I installed both to its original install path (except I didn't use "C: drive"). The JAVA updates won't let me install them to the GOLD version folder. I've tried everything to my limited knowledge up to this point. Is there anyting else that I can do? Please let me know. Thanks

I'm sorry, the monitor specs are Dell 1905f, resolution from 800x600 to 2048x1536. I did pre-set to 1024x768 on several attempts.

Have you tried disabling the sound? It could be a sound card/Java issue. I'm not able to recall the exact settings file tweak you might want to use, but Johan should be able to remind us if you can't find it in the settings file!

Have you also tried running it with the desktop resolution set to 1024x768 @ 60Hz? There seems to be some Java oddness going on with other refresh rates.

If they are fairly recently downloaded they should have the latest patches already applied.

Cheers

I downloaded them both last week. I never change from the 60hz rate. The game doesn't load to be able to turn off the sound. The sound card is Creative SoundBlaster X-Fi.

You can disable it by editing the settings.txt file and then see if it'll load. Off course you'd need to change both "NO_SOUND_EFFECTS" and "NO_MUSIC" from 0 to 1.

Thanks for the display. I changed both games sound lines as shown, also with window mode set at 0 and at 1. CEaW is still not showing up in taskmanager. The java.exe is using +112,000K's. I chose the low end CPU option. After the intro video, it still just flashes loading game... . I let it do this for 5 minutes, but after the first 30 seconds, there was not anymore "hard drive" noise, as if it would be loading.
CNaW is the same, except it displayed in window mode, but still hung up at the loading screen. It showed up in taskmanager as "running" but never opened. The java was using 116,000K's. Could the problem be my RAM? I'm maxed on the systems capacity.
I'm going to reinstall both games again. Both download "exe" files were 175MB, is that the appropriate size? I appreciate your help and suggestions.

My process shows up as "Commander.exe" (I purchased v1.00 and upgraded several times to v1.12 gold) and is showing memory usage of 642,380K (which is, 627 MB). The total size of my CEaW install is 236 MB. I'm running with 2048 MB of RAM.

Now when I run CEaW on my laptop, which only has 512 MB of RAM I have to run in the "Low RAM" mode.

It looks like there is a totally different install for the GOLD vs. the 1.0 version. I have no Commander.exe, only java files in the main folder, plus the other subfolders. Could I be able to download an earlier version to install, since the demo worked before? I am at a loss on both games. Does Slitherine have any other solutions? Thanks

Sorry you are having problems. I'll need Johan to check this out and get back to you as he's the developer.

Until we know what the issue is it woudl be hard to say for sure. I can't see how it would help unless you are failing to install. Once installed the code is exactly the same.

I was hoping.... The only thing that I could add, is that I have updated thru Wndows xp SP3. As far as Java updates, the Java control panel states - Java 6 Standard Edition, version 6 uppdate 14, (build 1.60_14-b08). Current runtime settings 1.6 platform.

RAM memory is important in order to load the Commander games, how much RAM do you have who cannot load the game?
If you get stuck infinite delay in the "loading game" screen then it is most likely a out of memory problem.

Commander series comes with Java already included so no need to update the version via Windows.

I have 1GB of RAM. You are probably right. I have played the demo for Commander Europe at War ok, so I thought this would be no different. I also have ended as many processes as possible before opening the game, but the same result every time. This is also happening with Naploeon at War. I've even downloaded the demo again to compare. I have numerous games that I currently run ok where 1GB is recommended. That is why I'm at a loss with these 2 games. Is there anything else that you can suggest? If there are no other solutions possible, I have 2 games that I can't use that I resently purchased from the Slitherine site. Thanks for everyone's responses.

If the demo runs, this feels more like a problem with (perhaps) some underlying Java stuff. This is especially true as we have the poster who was working yet now has the same symptoms as you.

We will see if there is any way we can get more information from you guysto nail down the cause of this problem.

Cheers
