And, yes, both players behaved very well. In fact were there any players who did not take kindly to an umpire ruling in the FoG games?
None.

Refering to putting stuff in an FAQ
dave_r wrote:Where do you put something for where there are no specific rules then?
I started to draft an "umpiring philophy" document to include some of these and shelved it for time and other purposes. The below was where i started. I had a variety of other points. In hindsight many of the other points were irrelevant as players did not get worked up about things. But perhaps some want an umpiring suggestions that is for those supremely interested in tournaments and this stuff is rather easy to ignore for the vast majority of gamers.

1) No where (it is thought) should this philosophy be construed to replace or create new rules.
2) The Umpire reserves the right to rule “in the spirit” of the rules and invoke the Author’s suggestions that attempts to manipulate or distort the rules as intended into something perverse be met with a punch in the nose, which in this case will be a ruling not an act of physical violence.
3) The Umpire will tend to follow clear author intent expressed on the Field of Glory forums, when it can be remembered.

You missed the all important first rule of umpiring:

1. Any attempt at bribery will result in immediate negotiation

On a more serious note, probably something like this is appropriate:

1. An umpire will follow European Law rather than British Law, i.e. it is the intent of the rule rather than the specific wording will be followed

In pounds or dollars?

You would be more than welcome at a round of the Northern doubles but as it is only a 1 day comp I think that a transatlantic flight might be pushing it.
