Division 1

SnuggleBunnies (Breton) defeats rs2excelsior (Armenian) 47-10

The Breton army, consisting almost entirely of Light Spear Cavalry, engages in the cunning strategy of a head-on charge:

Deeter (Thracians) defeated wmpryor (Indians) 49-11

In a previous battle, I was the baby seals. This time the club was on the other foot. Indian bowmen didn't stand a chance in melee. Good game.

Division 3 Results

wmpryor (Breton 936 AD) defeats Wakavengerf (Indo-Parthian 60BC) 52 - 23

This battle devolved into 3 mini-battles. An open plain fought between cataphracts and lancers. A large hill with difficult slopes and a completely rough plateau, and
a checkerboard rough area between the hill and a forest on my right flank. Initially the battle was closely fought with losses between our forces about even. Eventually I managed to wear
down the Indo-Parthians at a faster pace and his army cracked. Thank you Wakavengerf for an enjoyable game!

Div 1

Karvon with Elamites defeated General Shapur commanding Lombards 68-40.

The armies met in the hill country which heavily favored the Elamites proponderounce of bowmen. Three rugged hills formed an inverted triangle in about the center of my deployment area with extending or neighboring gentle slopes adjacent effectively forming an almost continuous ridge for me deploy on or behind. A large woods lay on my far left behind this ridge anchoring my left flank. A few small gentle hills faced my ridges and there was a large rough area on my far left beyond my ridge. A long rough ridge ran along the center and left of the enemy baseline and I didn't consider that as having any impact really as I fully expected to be on the defensive given the large number of lancers the Lombards typically have.

The Elamite list is pretty boring, virtually everyone in the army has a bow and there aren't really that many options to choose from. The one thing I find interesting is the bow armed light chariots and I think I maxed out on those, taking 8. I also maxed out on light foot and Assyrian style mediums, I think I had 4 or 5 of each of those. I took the pair of cavalry and then the rest of the points were used up on the medium bow, I think I ended up with 14-16 or so of those.

My plan was pretty simple; a my infantry would deploy on the rough hills, my cavalry on the flanks and my chariots would be hidden behind the ridge on my left. I would try to use my lights and horse to lure the Lombard lancers into kill zones of my archers on the hills.

The Lombards brought a fair sized infantry contingent, around half a dozen light archers, 3-4 massed archers and 4 raw shieldwalls. These they deployed on or in front of the steep hills in the center of their line. They had 3 divisions of lancers, 4-5 in each deployed in line in front of their infantry. They were a bit perplexed by what they saw of my army and initially, cautiously moved their left and right lancer divisions wide of my hill top position and slowly advanced their infantry and central lancers forward.

The flanking divisions drew within range of my archers and quickly began to take losses. They pulled the survivors back from their left and shifted their lancers more to the right. Thier right division advanced further and we sprang our massed chariots on them, shooting up quite a few. They attempted to run down the chariots which scattered them a bit more and we picked off more and more, eventually destroying most of the right plus most of the center division which shifted to support them.

The Lombard infantry moved down to help counter my archers, some of which had come off the hills in their eagerness to plug lancers. The resulting archery dual went badly for the Lombards, given our numbers advantage. As nearly all the lancers had all shifted to the right, we more aggressively advanced off our hills to drive off and engage the inferior number of opposing bowmen. Most of the defensive spear was shot up and fled. One surviving unit locked into melee in the rough. Some of the surviving lancers attacked my bowmen on my left who were on the slopes of a gentle hill by this point and eventually broke these and took away some neighbors in the resulting collapse.

Some of the routing Lombards managed to rally, little by little, but that merely prolonged the eventual collapse. Our chariots and cavalry managed to chase some of those down and the infantry battle, despite our losses from the lancers, swung more and more in our favor as we brought our numbers to bear, and the Lombards collapsed just before dusk.

A view of the final positions.

DanZanzibar (Lombards) defeats Blagrot (Hephthalite) 60-54

I had a lucky rally when I was at 60% and a couple of turns later my opponent was not so lucky. Sorry for the robbery Blagrot! Great game and well played.

OK, so I'm back from my hiking since yesterday morning. Is there currently any challenge issued for me that I haven't yet picked up? (There was a multitude waiting for me, and I could only accept five per day or something... :) )

Division 3 result:

Delbruck (Rus) defeats wmpryor (Arab 312BC-299AD) 64-37. Mounted and MF Arabs vs HF Rus doesn't produce a traditional battle, and can be difficult for both armies. The Arabs were able to keep it reasonably close until the last turn of the game, when a couple of routs pushed them over the 60% breakpoint.

General Shapur (Viking) draws with Challange 1(Byzantine) 5:0 (both sides agreed to end the pain)

Sadly a game of infantry vs horse archers. Although the vikings did take out the heroic enemy CinC and his entourage (surely that counts for something).

Thanks for the write up. Very interesting seeing my moves from your point of view. My strategy here was to load up the left flank with cav on a gamble that you would assume it was going on the right flank and set up accordingly, leaving me a gap to get behind your army. Failing that, the plan was to line up my light cav to force you to charge and break up your line - allowing me some flank charges and to get behind you. This i did - but Romans just dont chase as often as other armies

Other than you outplaying me as a given. The game went downhill for me 1. because you didn't leave the gap i needed on your right at setup, 2. because that cav wouldn't break, 3, the river only gave me one flank to work on.

I knew none of my cav would be able to damage even your crap units on a head on charge, so this was really the only choice left.

How did you tally up the points of my army that was visible so quickly - seemed like you had an app for it - lol

Still, an interesting game and thanks for the write up.
