A Roman dagger and some books

Post by Athos1660 »

A 2,000-year-old Roman dagger, that was discovered in a trench at a burial ground in Haltern am See (north-west Germany) last year, has been restored very nicely. It is thought to have belonged to a soldier from the Roman legion fighting Germanic tribes in the 1st century.

Amazing how they can restore what looked like a rusty old bit of metal to something that looks like that now.

One of these daggers (pugio) can be seen on Hypernator's grave at the Römerhalle Museum in Bad Kreuznach :

I am going to guess that was owned at some point by a general or a very rich man.

In any case, according to the French text mentioned in OP, the blade of this dagger shows wear marks, so its owner used it on the battlefield and it was not just a formal dagger. It was made out of several metals (bronze, brass and tin). Enamel and red glass were used for Its decoration.

btw Osprey Publishing, a company specializing in military history, will be giving five free eBooks each week for the next four weeks.
This week, one of these books might interest FoG2's fans : Kaveh Farrokh, Sassanian Elite Cavalry AD 224–642.
