The Russian cavalry attempted to take on the flanks of the Byzantine cavalry but suffered badly when they were caught evading. Meanwhile the Russian infantry advanced and attempted to bring the Byzantine centre to battle. The Byzantines chased the Russian left flank cavalry to the top left corner whilst the majority of the Byzantine cavalry headed south, pursued by the Russians. The Russians broke into two with some Byzantines heading for each of the bottom corners. When caught by the Russians, the infantry numbers told, but several units escaped. It became a battle of the corners, with the Byzantines winning the top left, and, thanks to their light troops, the bottom right, whilst the Russians had some success in the bottom left.

Night fell before the Byzantines could bring their spread out troops back to take on the Russians. Two Byzantine Calvary hiding in the woods refused to collapse despite being attacked by multiple infantry. A few Byzantines managed to get back to hit these infantry in the rear and cause them to break, only to be attacked themselves by more infantry. A close game with an interesting end.

Thanks for the game Garokan.

Division C

fikabo (Polish with Vikings) defeated markwatson (Frankish with Vikings) 43:18

A game of two similar armies. Without mountains and other obstacles, only 2 forests on the opponent's side.
At the beginning I had a problem because the opponent hid a large part of the army in the forest and did not know exactly what he had and in which forest. I assumed that most on my right wing (because there was a larger forest).
Main fights took place in the middle which I had a bit stronger (you can say that 2 massed archers stronger which I managed to make a flanked attack which made a bigger difference and won the game). The opponent tried to surround me with his wings, he was stronger there and on my right wing he almost managed to do it (I think it was missing from 4 turns to liquidate my right wing).

Thanks for game.

Thanks. And the match against you was one of the toughest in the tournament, if your horses didn't decide to hunt my light horses, maybe the result would be the opposite.

Division D

Questar17 - Carthaginian 235-146 BC with Syracusan ally vs SawyerK - Roman 199-106 BC with Spanish 300-10 BC ally 62:41

It was impressive battle vs romans. SawyerK chose classic roman formation in 3 lines in the centre of battlefield + placing 2 cavalry units in the back creating a few flanking oportunities for me vs tough legions. In 1st round of skirmishing i got some advantage destroying or wounding his units and starting to try flanking vs flanks of his army using numerical superiority but after a while in the centre he achieved some breaks of my mediocre infantry. Once i broke his flanks and moved my outnumbered cavalry at his rear the result was of the battle was determined though my infantry in the center suffered a lot but stayed firm in close combat allowing a possibity to strike at his back. Almost Cannae battle but with some luck for me indeed:) I was impressed by your warband who 2 destroyed my 2 spanish scutarii units despite of flanking and wounded my elephant stack.

GG SawyerK, hope to meet in the battlefield again

Division B

garymann Arabs defeated Challenge1 Lydians 41-12

Closer and more tense then the score suggests. Ended up with slugfest on arab infantry left on a RGO hill and camels vs hoplites centre! Iain played a stubborn and skillful defense on the hill, finally overcome by the pressure.

Thanks for the game Iain, sent you a PM.

Division A

harveylh – Khorasanian 821-1003 AD with Arab (Abbasid) 815-835 AD ally defeats NikiforosFokas - Byzantine 988-1041 AD with Georgian ally,58-23.

On a somewhat constrained battlefield with hills on one flank and a water feature on the other, both sides tried to turn their opponent’s right flank. The Arab spearmen mainly resisted the Byz lancers but the Varangians tore a hole in the Arab line. Meanwhile led by elephants and archers the Arabs turned the Byz right flank and that was the difference.

About as Pyrrhic a victory as I've had. Turn before it was 55 for Rome and 59 for Pyrrhus. Thanks for a good game.
