self bow
self bow
Hi all!
Would it be possible to create a weak self bow, range 50-60 paces? Perhaps modifying an existing weapon? Is there an online guide for dummies explaining how this type of modifications are done?
Regards,
Henry

Re: self bow
It will require modding the scripts.urkki63 wrote:Hi all!

Re: self bow
Can you elaborate a bit? If modding the scripts means coding in any shape or form then never mind the whole thing. Working on text files (and the like) is easy enough.
I'm trying to beef up my chariots a bit. They were much more useful in many earlier periods partly because of their superior weaponry. Fine for the Rise of Rome, though.

It means coding. Not particularly complex coding, but any coding is too complex if you have never done any.urkki63 wrote:Can you elaborate a bit? If modding the scripts means coding in any shape or form then never mind the whole thing.

Well, I haven't so never mind the whole thing then. Will have to try something else. Perhaps I can make them self bow guys so demoralized to start with that they take to the hills at the first sight of superior weaponry..

Or give them only 50% bow or less in the squads file.urkki63 wrote:Well, I haven't so never mind the whole thing then. Will have to try something else. Perhaps I can make them self bow guys so demoralized to start with that they take to the hills at the first sight of superior weaponry..

Re: self bow
How about this. Copy the Squads.csv file from /Data in the main build to the main folder of your custom folder. (Not to a /Data subfolder)
Find the line with Levy_Psiloi (line 12)
Change the model used to an archer by changing the string in the AssetFileName column (column S) from "levy_psiloi" to "light_archers"
Then you will have some crappy skirmishers armed with 33% javelin, 33% sling and 33% bow, who will look and shoot arrows like archers, but at virtually no effect when at long range, and reduced effect except at point-blank range.

Re: self bow
Yes, that would probably work. Will try and let you know. Many missile units were arguably something like that anyway especially in Syria/Palestine where the humble sling is a popular weapon even today.
Would lowering "experience" effect shooting negatively? ¨Unit capabilities" lists both bow and longbow - is the longbow in use? The Middle Eastern composite bow (charioteers) was quite comparable to the Medieval longbow in effect if not in cost.
Producing a Central Asian/Middle Eastern Composite Bow required a highly skilled expert, costly materials and anything up to 10 years to make. It must have been prohibitively expensive to your average Nubian or Canaanite auxiliary bowman.
Cheers!

Yes, but not necessarily by as much as you want, and it would also lower the troop quality, and hence resilience..
There is currently no code for longbows - we will put it in when we get to Medieval.¨Unit capabilities" lists both bow and longbow - is the longbow in use? The Middle Eastern composite bow (charioteers) was quite comparable to the Medieval longbow in effect if not in cost.

Re: self bow
Hi Richard!
The new archers are every bit as useless as I wanted, thanks. They did occasionally fight back though - presumably with their spears - if charged. Can I remove them? I'd prefer archers to use their bows and slings or alternatively just run.
The theory is (John Keegan, Robert Drews et al.) that the early charioteers simply parked their vehicles safely out of range of self bows/slings or moved around the terrified enemy at a slow steady trot constantly peppering them with arrows (range 100 m or so) like prehistoric machine guns. Unable to defend themselves in any sensible way, enemy infantry turned tail and fled. Hunting them down on fast moving chariots was then like a walk in the park. Very much like a sunny hunting expedition at home on the steppe. No hand to hand fighting at all.
Unfortunately, the chariots did quite a bit of charging today. Now horses are very smart animals. They would not charge headlong into a solid wall of people even if asked (unlike most people..) Is there anything I can do to reduce that?
Where are the columns (like S column)? Having trouble reading the Squad data info posted earlier. Was using WordPad.
Cheers!

Sure, why not,urkki63 wrote:Hi Richard!

You need to use a spreadsheet.Where are the columns (like S column)? Having trouble reading the Squad data info posted earlier. Was using WordPad.
