First draft Early Principate army
Im trying to get an principate list in to order. Im putting it around 100AD. I allready had 2 DBA-boxes of them and some bits and pieces and i want to see how what i have would work as it is. Here goes (note - not in "order of battle"):
IC
2xTC
Fortified Camp
4 Aux archers MF
4 Aux. foot MF with 2 supporting LF bow
4 Aux. foot MF with 2 supporting LF bow
6 Veteran Legiones (HF, superior, armoured)
6 Veteran Legiones (HF, superior, armoured)
4 LF slingers (average)
8 LF Allied archers
4 Aux Cv (superior)
4 LH Numibians
2 Light artillery
Sarmatian Ally
1TC
6 Sarmatian Cv
I feel low on Legionares but i dont want to buy new miniatures piecemeal so i hope some of you can give me some feedback on the list? it would be much appriciated!
BTW - I havent played romans in any type of tabletop game. I have been more into the helenistic scene so far.

Definitely need more legionarii IMO - a couple of 4 base BGs would fit in nicely I think. Personally I'm not keen on artillery so I'd drop them and I'm not sure about the Sarmatians either to be honest.
Whilst I understand this is what you have in lead I think it is too lightweight for a Roman army and it'd be defeated by the soft targets being taken out.

imo support from light foot to legions and auxilary main beneficial is enhancing BG size and thus strenghening it from shooting and hits in close combat.
half a dice from charging mounted doesn't seem to me the main interest.
given that, i'd be reluctant to use lf support on 4 bases BG, coz it makes it 6 bases and thus still have to test if shot at by 2 hits. I'd prefer 6 bases supported with 3 bases LF thus having a 9 bases BG very solid.
ur point of view nik? i saw ur prinicpate roman army on ur website, full of 4 bases BG supported. So iguess u have different point of view.

Whilst it is still a CT test from shooting if you take 2 hits on a 6 base BG you do not get the -1 modifier for taking 1Hp2B which is a big difference.
Also they last longer in melee.

I really think an IC is a waste of points in a Principate Roman army. The extra cohesion modiefer vs shooting isnt really needed, and you are better off with a low pre-battle initiative so you get to move first.Fulgrim wrote:How about the generals? Id like to have an IC, but the cost is gruesome..
More legionaries!

I one player at the club vouches for 4 TC:s, but i really like having som quality at the helm.. 1 FC and 2 TC?rbodleyscott wrote:I really think an IC is a waste of points in a Principate Roman army. Nah. 4 TCs for the win. And make sure you don't have 10 bases of LH/Cavalry. You want a PBI of 0.Fulgrim wrote:Thanks!
