Keyth I can't believe you are taking on another one. You really are making me question your sanity. I will however consider your offer.

Count me in. I don't know anything about the history but I am willing to give it a try. I have played Sengoku Jidai solitaire few times and I am impressed.

I did say soon(ish) :)

I am just getting some idea of the level of interest before embarking on anything too in-depth. Current ideas revolve around a number of clans fighting for x number of provinces to become Shogun - clans could be one or more players. I am aiming for something light on rules but with as much scheming as people want to do - alliances, back-stabbing, etc. Hopefully lots of fighting as it is the Warring States after all! :)

Thank you all for the interest. Realistically, with two different ECW campaigns on the go (from which I am learning all kinds of lessons about rules and structure) this campaign is unlikely to see the light of day until some point in mid to late August at the earliest. However, I will be throwing out some gameplay ideas for discussion as they occur to me; as the ECW games have taught me, there can be many unintended consequences from what one person (me) considers a simple rule!

Sort of :) It will be more similar to the Behemoth ECW campaign that I a running rather than a tournament, but with multiple factions (whether individuals or groups) and fewer 'hard' rules. With luck, we will capture the anarchy and factionalism of the period while also having some great Yari to Teppo battles.

Daimyo to Shogun v.0.1

Post by keyth »

*** For Discussion ***

The aim of the game is to become Shogun of Japan by out-shining rival clans. The key elements are Power, Honour & Koku.

Power is accrued from Provinces and Castles.
Honour is gained by fighting.
Koku pay for it all.

Your clan will attain the Shogunate once they have amassed a certain number of Victory Points (primarily gained from Power but assisted by Honour).

Each clan starts with x daimyo, each with a field army (1200 AP), x castles and their share of provinces based on total number of clans. Half of a clan's provinces will be joined together in a regional powerbase, the rest will be drawn at random. As scoring is by clan, there can be as many players as there are daimyo in a clan.

Turn Sequence
Collect Koku
Pay upkeep & remove unpaid troops
Bid for initiative
Hire ronin
Build castles
Research forces
Train reserves

Collect Koku
Each province produces 100 koku.

Pay upkeep and remove unpaid troops
Each army costs Current AP - 1200 to maintain each turn, minimum 0. An army loses any extra points which are 'unpaid' this turn.

Bid for initiative
A clan may bid a number of koku to gain the initiative this turn.

Hire Ronin
A clan may invest koku in ronin which do not need to be declared as part of an army until battle is joined. This investment must result in a number of AP being spent on ronin.

Build Castles
A clan may fund castle building. Each province may have one castle. Each castle may only increase one rank per turn. You cannot build a rank higher than the total number of castles that you own. So with three castles, none could be higher than rank 3. Castles degrade by one rank when captured.

Research Forces
Koku may be spent on research. Each tier reached will advance the date that the clan may use for choosing army lists.

Train Reserves
Koku may be spent on training new levies to reinforce armies or provide replacements.

Honour
Honour can only be earned by Daimyo, not garrisons.

Each turn, the field armies can attack enemy provinces (all of which will have a garrison at the very least) in an attempt to subjugate sufficient territory to become Shogun.

I suppose there will be diplomacy and scheming which is up to the players. Would be good to actually be able to transfer Koku between players.

The upgrade or download or what ever runs the program for this campaign is what I am after.

I think jomni meant - did you mean the software to run the battles or the software to run the campaign?

The battle software already exists in the form of Sengoku Jidai, which can be downloaded in game from the Community Downloads button on the historical screen. It has no scenarios but there are versions to run SP and MP Skirmishes.

The campaign software (if it exists) is not integrated into the game, and will presumably be run semi-manually by keyth with the aid of spreadsheets or whatever he uses.
