No replay of opponent's turn shown in multiplayer

Post by StefanDK »

Firstly, the good part: I have played Panzer Corps since it was published and mostly it is working very well and I am very, very pleased with the game!

Now the bad part: Some games tend to start out fine, but after a few (or many) turns, the replay stops being shown before I can take my turn in a multiplayer game.

That is very annoying since it is both useful and great fun to see what the opposing human player is doing.

Right now I am playing a grand and very well designed (custom) scenario that encapsulates the whole of Europe and Africa and America. Each replay takes about 5 minutes and for the first 12 turns this worked perfectly. And a LOT happens in these replays that I don't want to miss. But now the replays have stopped and I have no clue why - like all the other times. There are approximately ... 86 turns remaining or until one of us loses the capitals or the war ends by surrender. That is a long time to endure with no replays, although that will give me about 7 hours more in my REAL life :-)

Is there ANY WAY AT ALL to fix this??? The game is uploaded to the servers.

I will perhaps try the "/nocache" parameter suggested elsewhere. Anything else? I am all ears!

I can elaborate a bit more then.

It usually appears every 10th or 15th game or so, but this large scenario I have played only once so I do not know whether it is the size that makes the replay disappear.

Also, it is also the opposing player who experiences this.

And thank you for looking into it, by the way!

If you are referring to 1941 scenario, it's possible that some weird issues will happen when playing it.
The Panzer Corps engine wasn't designed for scenarios as big as that one and will never work well with such scenarios.

The /nocache parameter can help, but only slightly.

Well, it has happened many times during the perhaps more than 100 multiplayer games I have played and this scenario is just the latest example, and it is almost half the fun that goes away, plus you miss out on some of the dynamics and intelligence since paratroopers can pass you by without being discovered, cities can be captured without my knowing etc.

The problem do seem to arise rather inconsistent and irregular, though, so I understand perfectly well if it is a hard issue to debug. I am a developer myself by the way.

It's like I've told it shouldn't be happen with vanilla scenarios. With 1941 scenario, everything is possible.
What I find curious is that last update is from January 2014, and only now people start reporting the issue.
Do you have the Steam version or the Slitherine/Matrix version?

I know I for one only just got the game Christmas last year -- I'm sure a few people were picking it up because it was on steam and then the Christmas sale on top of that.

That's still Steam version. So the issue is common to both versions.

I have now made the switch to the Steam version (rather oddly, somehow it is rendering graphics different and makes my game slower, but maybe it is just the animations settings, I am not sure - it seems to lag a bit, though - well, that is a different issue).

I still do not get the replays, however I understand that the 1941 scenario is not officially supported, but it could really be nice knowing what could cause this. It's taking longer to load when it is not showing the replay.

Steam version uses a different audio library. Maybe the lag you are experiencing is related with that. Animations and sfx are related with each other.
This fixes some of the crashes caused by audio codec conflicts, but it can as usual, induce some problems to others.

Yes, that sounds absolutely right - I actually did experience this issue once when I installed some audio codecs that was somehow incompatible with the game. Well, not the biggest issue anyway.

Belated but I, and the players I was PBEMing against, all use the Steam version as well.

This just started happening in a multiplayer Panzer Corps game I am in, too, which is why I am searching the forums. We are about halfway done with the game (Market Garden scenario) and are playing a paired game - the replay did not show up on either one of the paired games. Is there a way to roll back to a previous version of the game engine that doesn't have this issue?
I play the Steam version of Panzer Corps, and my opponent is using the iPad version. He is still seeing the replays.
Thanks,
Wes
