Observations from early gaming

Post by gregernest »

I have had this rules set for a few years now, but I am just getting the chance to put lead on the table.

We noticed in our first go round that shooting does not seem to do anything unless you do/can inflict at least three hits against battle groups of 6+ stands. Is this truly the case, or have we done something wrong there.

More questions to follow as we explore this game or drift into another system. (Too much ADD here!)

Thanks! -GE

I find that surprising as generally death rolls whittle units down rapidly due to the volume of shooting along the line even if cohesion tests are passed.

That's correct for a morale test... However there is always the death throws to beat.. Eg: 1 hit from muskets ... No morale test but there is a death roll of 1 to beat... Remember bows (non gunpowder weapons) have a -2 adjustment on the death throws.... If you score 3 hits from bows, then it's a death roll of 1 to beat. But it would a death roll 3 from muskets etc.. To beat...

Hope helps

I think you take a test on one hit per 3 bases, so 2 hits on a normal unit. Taking tests is generally the only way to fail them.. :-) so I think you'll find that even taking a test is A Bad Thing to be Avoided If a You Can

Three hits means you are testing at -1 for one hit per 2 bases. So, more likely to fail...

I thought I read on the table in the back that there was a +2 to the die for death tests from shooting... lemmie look...

Ah, now that I read through the whole thing, I see this does not apply to firearms. Thanks for making me re-read. Couldn't that have been stated easier?

Do leaders get a third move when detached? The way I read it, no.

Correct. They have to be with mounted unit making a third move.. But remember you get "three moves" per move when detached by... 2x march moves (usually 12") - detached. Then another 6" (usually) in tbe JAP ... Remember generals movement is still affected by the terrian they cross just like anyother unit.... Generals move as LH.

+2 to "Death Tests" - not morale (or "Cohesion" to give it the proper name) tests ..

I got that last about the Death Tests vs. Cohesion

Without the +2 Death Tests are once again deadly in our next game. Just wish we had enough metal and terrain to have four people get in... :?

Well, very different and faster game this weekend with getting the Death Rolls correct!

Another question: When a BG is lost due to auto-break, what happens to an attached leader? Does hit just sit on the table? Or does he leave with the unit?

He just sits there feeling very lonely and looking for another unit to lead to their doom.

Any Broken Unit, however it happens, must make a variable break move in the phase they are broken (Impact, shooting or Melee)and again in the Joint Action Phase and if at that point they are Auto Broken, they are then removed (however many take the unit off straight away if there would be no effect).

The attached General always makes the initial Rout move with the Broken Unit. If this takes the unit off table then the general routs off as well! If a pursuer is still in contact with the unit, they get the chance to kill the general on a 10+. In the JAP Rout Move, the general is free to leave the unit and moves his normal move in any direction he wishes (usually towards the nearest friendly unit!).

To see what happens if an unattached General is contacted by an enemy unit, see p.69 last bullet on Movement of Commanders!

Thanks, Don! We had most of that right, then! We just thought it weird that the leader was left alone, but hey! At least he's still in the fight!
