Yes. It installed perfectly fine.- Does the game install on your machine?
No option to automatically run the game once installation is complete however.
Game loaded up fine.- Does it run on your machine, are there any crashes/serious bugs?
There were no stupidly annoying intro videos, I didn't have to spend 5 minutes watching an Matrix Games logo, then a Slytherine logo, followed by an Nvidia logo, then an Intel logo, then a Copyright notice, then a Games Workshop video, then a game intro followed by a game logo video. Thank you. Please keep this.
It took just 8 seconds from opening the icon, loading it from the launcher then selecting a scenario. This is good.
Main menu was fine.
Alt-tab worked. It didn't crash or freeze (Skyrim is horrible with this for example, so alt-tab issues aren't confined to games with smaller dev teams).
Alt-tabbing back and forth worked fine.
There were no issues with the alt-tabbing resetting mouse position or the cursor reverting incorrectly to either the desktop cursor in-game or the in-game cursor on the desktop. Even when the game was alt-tabbed the cursor would switch when mousing over the game coming from a desktop app (ie the browser).
I would suggest that if possible when alt-tabbing that the game should fully minimise. An alt-tab out of a full screen window should completely minimise the game.
The game launcher doesn't go away after launching the game.
Options menu doesn't exist, presumably this is by design in the beta.
Loading of the map went fine.
I got "victory" with no real idea of how, and to be honest I was probably getting smashed since I had lost a bunch of units and hadn't made much ground.
After the victory screen I pushed one of the buttons and had a crash. I recreated it in a normal turn as well.
On my 2560x1600 screen the game appears to be running correctly at this resolution.- Is the performance good, or is the game too slow/sluggish? Is the scrolling/zooming smooth or jumpy?
The units look a little fuzzy when fully zoomed in.
The options menu during the game is really large. Doesn't really mean anything though.
Scrolling was fine in the small scenarios, but I picked several of the larger ones at the end of the list and scrolling became sluggish and mouse control poor.
No colour blind mode. It will be hard to distinguish units be colour if you keep the same colours in the mini-map.- Are there any UI layout issues on your screen?
I am red-green colourblind, and the major colour schemes in this game are red & green. I would suggest an option to pick your own colours, or at the very least, an option to change say, the steel legion/imperial side to another colour, maybe yellow or white or silver.
I had massive problems in various games for the lack of colourblindness. One was Frozen Synapse, which I couldn't tell the difference between teams at all, Battlefield 3 would have been bad except their colour-blind mode is great. Planetside 2, I could only play the team who were red, because otherwise I couldn't tell the difference between the blues & purple team, and I'd just team-kill everyone (and even then, I could often team-kill platoon mates because one of the squads had a colour similar to the enemy colour).
The UI could be a bit smaller. It dominates the screen on the right hand. That said, there is still a lot of room on my resolution.
No confirmation you wish to end the turn. Even if you simply do nothing and just click the next turn with none of your units having moved or fired or done anything.
No visual indication of the range of a units fire/los unless you actually have a target within range.- What do you think about the UI and controls in general?
It's fine.Do you like the current layout of the main screen (with tactical map), or would you prefer "UI at the bottom" layout as used in many games?
The scenario choice screen has a lack of information about the map/mission you're about to play. I presume this will improve in the future? Things like size, difficulty of opposition, any interesting features or unusual features for that map.- What do you think about the way the briefings are presented, is it good or any issues there?
Other notes:- Strategic map and minimap - are they ok or how they can be improved?
The sound is ah.. interesting. Not sure if it's placeholders or simply saving money and deciding later if better sounds will be made, but it's a bit tacky. Especially the guy shouting "fire!"
