I also can't work out why you can play 20 games in Scotland and it only counts as 3 competitions. Is it that there's a league that only counts as one, like the flat cap 'n' ferret league?
Yes. The Scottish League includes 4 rounds each of 3 games. The entire League counts as a single minor tournament.
Ooo look. Sevenoaks to Manchester is futher than Edinburgh or Glasgow to manchester. Can we have a Kent league?
I think you're missising the point.
Thanks for clarifying Alan.

I do understand your point, I think. Which is that Scottish based players have quite a travel barrier to get to many English competitions. if they don't travel outside of Scotland they can only get a ranking of 75. So, for example. if the best UK player were based in Scotland and only played Scottish competitions, they would be ranked 14th.

Not sure what could be done to resolve that though; other than have more tournaments in Scotland. It seems sensible to have scottish rankings, since most scottish players only play in Scottish competitions.

I imagine a similar, but more acute, issue impacts players in Wales and Northern Ireland.

With only 3 tournaments (and all counting as minor) the maximum score would be 60.

Graham/ Kevin - both right. However Northern Ireland comes under the RINIWA not BHGS.

The effects are that the BHGS rankings cannot be used as a guide to compare Scottish players over the year, nor can a Scottish based player realistically expect to get into the top 10 of the BHGS rankings. For example I top, just, the Scottish rankings and do pretty well at Britcon, my only English tournament, (3rd, 1st, 5th over last three years) but still only 13th in the BHGS rankings; clearly even worse for other players.

As for staging more tournaments, well next year we have Schiltron (FoG-AM), Scottish Open (FoG-AM), Square-Go (FoG-R), Scottish League (3xFoG-AM and 2xFoG-R). Thats 11 tournament days and 27 games. And not counting non-FoG tournaments. Not bad for a small group.

it'll still basically be the same finishing positions of the UK rankings or the Scottish League.
Unfortunately not. I've compared relative positions of Scots based players between the two and there are significant differences.

Latest rankings are now on the bhgs website.

Obviously the ranking software has broken. I'll make sure to implement an "upgrade" prior to the production of the next set.

Given your lack of attendance at Roll Call it will need to be a significant 'upgrade'! :)

We are looking for a host for next year's annual Worlds event (in Koblenz this year). Maybe Scotland would consider bidding?

Latest Rankings have been sent to the now-ever-so-efficient BHGS team who will no doubt have the full list available in the very near future.

These include Roll Call. It's all change at the top again! I was surprised that Rob Taylor wasn't at Roll Call as i could only find somebody called Taylor Robert. So I had to create a new person for them.

Code: Select all

Current	Previous	Player
1	2	Pete Dalby

Re: UK Rankings

I've just cleaned up the rankings and checked the tournaments and removed the ones that did not occur this year. The full rankings will be published as soon as Tim pops them on the website. Fortunately, I didn't need to carry out much "cleaning" as I was still ahead of Taylor Robert at the first attempt. Of course, these rankings still include Britcon last year, which is the single remaining tournament left until the end of year champion is unveiled! Pete Dalby is favourite, but a good showing by Andy would push him all the way (although I don't know if Andy is going this year?)

The top 20 look like this:

Code: Select all

1 1 Pete Dalby (Portsmouth) 5 96.08
2 2 Graham Evans (Pinner) 5 94.19
3 3 Andy Ellis (Impalers) 8 89.81
4 4 David Handley (Leeds) 9 88.48
5 5 Dave Ruddock (MAWS) 8 87.81
6 6 Robert Taylor (Halifax) 10 87.76
7 7 Graham Briggs (Reigate) 6 87.53
8 8 Lance Flint (N.Farnborough) 7 86.64
9 9 Phil Powell (MAWS) 8 83.74
10 10 Alan Cutner (Essex) 4 81.69
11 11 Richard Jeffrey-Cook (Society of Ancients) 8 79.70
12 12 Bob Amey (Impalers) 6 79.12
13 18 Gordon Jamieson (Central London) 11 74.23
14 16 Paul Johnston (York) 4 72.91
15 14 Dino Monticoli (Cannock) 7 71.02
16 17 David Bannister (Wessex) 6 70.91
17 15 David Fairhurst (Oxford) 6 61.47
18 13 Paul Longmore (MAWS) 4 60.43
19 19 Steve Brown (Plymouth) 4 59.66

Just for interest, I've removed the results for Britcon for last year - this is what the rankings would look like prior to the results for Britcon being entered:

Code: Select all

Pete Dalby	(Portsmouth)	4	84.91
Graham Briggs	(Reigate)	5	82.96
Robert Taylor	(Halifax)	9	80.01
Graham Evans	(Pinner)	4	79.49
Richard Jeffrey-Cook	(Society of Ancients)	7	78.79
Lance Flint	(N.Farnborough)	6	78.30
Andy Ellis	(Impalers)	7	78.10
David Handley	(Leeds)	8	75.66
Dave Ruddock	(MAWS)	7	74.77
Paul Johnston	(York)	4	72.91
Phil Powell	(MAWS)	7	71.18
David Bannister	(Wessex)	6	70.91
Dino Monticoli	(Cannock)	6	69.93
Bob Amey	(Impalers)	5	68.99
Gordon Jamieson	(Central London)	10	58.81
Dave Morrison	(Cheltenham)	8	58.58
Dave Saunders	(Central London)	8	57.80
Nik Sharp	(Warlords)	6	56.18
Alan Cutner	(Essex)	3	55.94
Hunter Hope	(Perth)	4	53.82
This doesn't necessarily give a true indication as this is the players best four tournaments with only Britcon to go - but it gives an idea of where players are without last years Britcon results to prop up their ranking :)

0.05 between us Dave, Britcon should be interesting.

Yeah, the problem is that I won last year and you were fourth (out of twenty nine). So I'm not exactly going to finish better than first and it is possible (although frankly, unlikely) that you may submarine your way to a podium place by picking the easy period this year.

Dave can you please please please change my club designation from Essex to GDWS. I still get some adverse comments about it!

As for the rankings without Britcon - very interesting. But ofcourse that leaves me with just 3 minor comps for my ranking. So I have everything to gain.
