Pool B result
macsen (Later Carthaginian (Africa)) 53/48 lost to Ricoual74 (Bosporan (Mid)) 36/46
I totally miss judged the end of he Bosporan line due to a very long wood, only to find a group of allied lancers appear in my rear, my Spanish cav fought valiantly but my elephant, Daisy, took to long to get there. Must say I lost pretty much every impact against light spears in the woods, If I had even decent luck it would have been different.
Thanks for the game.

Re: Rise of Rome tournament - main thread/post your results
A comment on this format.
With my own army I won 2/5, with the other guys army I won 5/5. Or to put it another way, out of 10 matches I played the Carthies won two. This leads me to the conclusion that they were the dog army in this div.
This leads me to the conclusion that this is a better format than the usual one as it comes more to skill and not the army you choose to use. I also looked at the numbers and if Pete and me had finished on equal points I would have pipped him on points between our two games, just.
Any other thoughts?

Re: Rise of Rome tournament - main thread/post your results

This is the fifth update to the tournament standings current to Dec. 22 at 3:00pm Eastern Time. X denotes the player clinched a playoff spot.
Pool A: 29/30 matches complete
CharlesWayneRobinson (7-1-2-22) swept Mike48 (0-0-9-0) to narrowly edge out Greetings44 (7-0-3-21) for second place in the pool. The only remaining match left is between Mike48 and Ulysisgrunt (1-0-8-3) who may not be advancing but are still playing for points for league rankings.
Pool B: 30/30 matches complete
Macsen (7-0-3-21) took first place from Stockwellpete (6-2-2-20) after splitting his series with Ricoual74 (4-1-5-13).
Pool C: 23/30 matches complete
Steve-h8 (8-0-2-24) clinches first place after sweeping Kmaher (1-0-5-3), who is now out of playoff contentions. Turk1964 (6-0-2-18) successfully defended second place from ZumHeuriger (5-0-3-15) for now after splitting their series. Mchargmg (2-0-3-6) also remains in playoff contention.
Pool D: 28/30 matches complete
Iandavidsmith (5-0-3-15) won 2 but lost to Batesmotel (6-0-3-18), meaning he must defeat Batesmotel in the away game and gain at least a point against first-place Jonathan4290 (9-0-0-27).
It appears we may actually complete the pool stage earlier than the specified deadlines. While we may begin the the quarter-finals earlier than January 15, please wait for the official word to begin the quarter-finals to avoid confusion.

Re: Rise of Rome tournament - main thread/post your results
As the tournament winds down, I would appreciate any feedback or suggestions, positive or negative, about the tournament. I will definitely be running more themed tournaments with a similar format and therefore feedback and suggestions are essential.
My own suggestions to myself thus far:
1) Some players really did not like their army. While the random armies is part of the fun of the format, the next tournament will likely allow players to list 3 armies they do NOT want. In my super-duper complex system of rolling dice to see which army players land on, if a player lands on a vetoed army, I would simply roll again until they land on an army they have not vetoed.
2) The tournament needs to be expanded both in size and skill range. The top A players were completely absent from this tournament and will be formally invited for the next tournament. In regards to size, more players should make the playoffs. The initial pool round will always feature a big variety of skill levels facing off against one another but perhaps 2 separate playoffs or a larger playoff where winners/losers of the first round of playoffs advance to either a championship/consolation bracket.

Re: Rise of Rome tournament - main thread/post your results
I think the paired mirror matches system is a great format for the reasons you've suggested. It really makes clear which armies are the stronger when you start comparing home/away stats. Other interesting trends include Turk1964 playing as Jewish Antigonus was 4-0-0 at home but 2-0-2 away; Voskarp playing as Ptolemaic was 4-0-1 at home and 1-2-2 away; MatteoPasi and Maximvs playing as Late Rep Roman Brutus/Cassiues were a combined 2-0-8 at home but 6-1-3 away.macsen wrote:A comment on this format.

Re: Rise of Rome tournament - main thread/post your results
Hey mate personally i love the format as it has got me to use stuff I wouldnt normally even consider due to my lack of ancients knowledge so it was fun only bad dice stopped me doing better, as for not liking your army well is it the army or is it the person, personally i reckon if you join you take as is and if you let vetos whats the point of the event??... just my opinionJonathan4290 wrote:As the tournament winds down, I would appreciate any feedback or suggestions, positive or negative, about the tournament. I think you've done a great job here Jonathan and look forward to the next instalment
Yes and I agree with Rex having an army randomly picked for you is a good thing because it forces you to use an army you wouldn't normally choose. You then have a chance to use your opponents army in the mirror game so in theory things should even out .I would never have chosen the Later Judeans as an army but after playing them they have definite advantages and obvious weaknesses .Contests like this are really good to hone your skill with what may be perceived as a weak army, so well done mate.

Re: Rise of Rome tournament - main thread/post your results
I would third the random selection of Armies with Mirror matches - and was it just a coincidence that the Numidian and Jewish Armies in Div C could both take allied Roman contingents which lets them up their options considerably. I've been having a lot of fun with the Numidians, even though they wouldn't have been a first choice for my army.
Good job mate!

Re: Rise of Rome tournament - main thread/post your results

So Batesmotel clinched a playoff spot with his win over Iandavidsmith. The only spot still up for grabs is Pool C's 2nd place which ZumHeuriger can clinch from Turk1964 if he can win his remaining 2 games against Kmaher.
Stay tuned, we'll likely begin the quarter-finals soon, as soon as we know the final spot.
