Methinks you missed the smiley there.

Doug has posted publically that FoG is a truly dire game and he should know he played less than half a game and it was obviously rubbish, DBMM is FAR better according to him and all the Australians who tried DBMM and decided they didn't like it are jumping to conclusions something that he obviously isn't :P

I would like to think anybody would give a new rule set 1/2 a dozen games at least before jumping to conclusions and especially when it would have been in Beta mode back then.

That would seem a reasonable aproach.

It is unusual for me to give up on a miniatures game after less than 6 plays, the only one I can think of that got that little attention was Armati which I think I played three times before deciding it wasn't for me. DBMM managed abut a dozen games and one comp before I reached the same conclusion.

FoG has currently made it over the hump and I think I have now played over 30 games with 14 of them being in comps. I am just starting to feel that I am in control of the game rather than the game being in control of me.

Oh well, when everyone is playing FoG he'll be out in the cold.

I remember the cries of anguish each time D&D changed editions... they all came around in the end :P

To be fair, Doug has since clarified that what he meant by his post was that his experience of FoG was dire, but he thought it would be fine as a game for people who like that sort of game and who can get up the learning curve of the rules. That puts him in a nearly analogous position to Hammy, who (assuming the holes in the rules get plugged) says that DBMM is not for him because it doesn't give the kind of game that he likes. Hammy did follow the DBMM beta from the start, though, which Doug didn't for FoG, so it would be more accurate to say that Doug's initial impression of FoG (beta version 6) was so bad that it put him off altogether (which has also been some people's response to DBMM).

I have played both and think they both give good games. The FoG beta 6.0 layout and wording did leave plenty of room for improvement (e.g. the lack of an index) but hopefully this has been sorted out in the published edition. DBMM could be better worded and cheese-proofed too, but the same could be said of DBM, which was nevertheless very popular.

I'll be in the Melbourne area around the 15th of March, but probably not by the 29th.

From my off list conversation with Doug
My final comment about FoG IIRC was that it didn't suit me, but each to his own. I was part of the Beta test group, got a copy, laid out units, played through sequences. As I didn't know anyone else who was a Beta tester in our group I felt I couldn't play through a full game until John G ordered his set and got a copy. At that point it became clear that I was making assumptions and eventually we just gave up. Since then i have re-read the rules and figured out what we missed. I will play again.
In the post I was refering to when I claimed Doug played less than a full game and then said the rules were dire he actually said something rather worse and I have pointed that out to him in a private E-Mail.

Having used the release rule book for my previous 5 games and having to go back to the beta last night I can't tell you how much better the final product is - it is streets ahead of the beta.

Hello all

I am happy to announce that Lawrence Greaves a very experienced UK based gamer who was involved in FOG as a play tester is going to Umpire the first day of Caesars.
