Some albums you should check out to get yourself in the mood
I'd recommend Those Once Loyal by Bolt Thrower and Verdun by Black Boned Angel if you want a metal soundtrack to this game. Verdun really evokes a special feeling, really captures the horrors of war in musical form.

Is it "deaf-metal"?

Bolt Thrower is Death Metal, Black Boned Angel is Drone Doom (like SunO))), Earth etc.). Hehe, but Bolt Thrower go along with any military strategy game as long as you like Extreme Metal, 'cause they only do lyrics about war. You could also check out some Martial industrial artists like Sophia (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F5luqE68Gj8), but in contrast to the two albums I've mentioned in the initial posts this stuff mostly isn't related to WW I.

Sorry, but death metal is not my scene (I'm old!). That Bolt Thrower chap sounds a bit like a Tibetan throat singer with a hangover!
This is much more melodic and was one of the first concept albums from the "underground" scene in the late 1960s. It tells the story of a man called "Private Sorrow", born at the beginning of the 20th century, who goes off to war . . .

Yeah, guess many outsiders of the metal scene can't really understand this kind of music. You actually have to get into this kind of music, guess no one can appreciate it initially. But getting into death metal has made me more open for all kinds of other experimental, weird music. BTW, I like the stuff you posted, 60s and 70s underground music is always interesting. I like the stuff like The Monks: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=feMvRfOQC50 They were some American GIs who founded a band in Germany. Very ahead of their time.

Another song here, this time from Al Stewart, a singer-songwriter who has many historical references in his work . . .

Al Stewart...Pete, you bring memories to life. One of my all-time favorite songs:

But now we are almost as far from the OPs music as can be. We old-timers shouldn't hijack this thread.

Forgot two other songs: 1916 by Motörhead (actually one of the softest songs by Motörhead, so pretty unusual for them): http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x3499q ... -1916_news
and One by Metallica: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EzgGTTtR0kc
BTW, thanks for the tips, hidde and stockwellpete! Good stuff!

Anders, I saw Al Stewart at Alexandra Palace in London in 1973 along with Renaissance, Vinegar Joe, Ten Years After and Wishbone Ash.hidde wrote:Al Stewart...Pete, you bring memories to life. One of my all-time favorite songs:

Hehe, think I have to use ProxTube to view this. It's blocked due to GEMA-copyright stuff in Germany (like many music videos)... Yeah, works!Anders, I saw Al Stewart at Alexandra Palace in London in 1973 along with Renaissance, Vinegar Joe, Ten Years After and Wishbone Ash.Also from that time, and they are still playing today are Barclay James Harvest, and they did this absolutely beautiful song about the Great War . . .

Wow Pete, that's an impressive line-up! I've listen a little to BJH but never really gotten into them but that song is great.
This started me jumping around on the youtube and then I came to think of a contemparary, totally awesome band:
Katzenjammer!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f3FoO-XjSLI
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B44wjt_66k0
The second song doesn't take off in earnest 'till two minutes in.
From Norway but I've never read a word about them here in Sweden nor seen them on TV or heard them on radio.
Nothing about war I'm afraid(one is about the devil and the other about a bar in Amsterdam) and I promise to not derail this thread anymore

Wouldn't expect to see to many bolt thrower fans around here or indeed any place lol.
Here's a more up tempo Motorhead song about the horrors of war. Death or Glory (Sounds better loud on a good stereo).
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DJzv3DWWVg8
And the final song from The 4th Crusade by Boltthrower. An odd narrative piece where he runs through all the wars in English history in a long slow British accent. Great album if you can handle that style and a cool user made clip that's well worth a look at (if only from a historical perspective).
Throughout the ages

Ah the futility of war eh, when will we learn ?
Sorry for being of topic. Have been thinking of getting this game, which is why i posted here.

This is quite moving from June Tabor. The chap being interviewed is Eamonn McCann, a Derry trade unionist and socialist . . .

Cool that finally someone came here who does know themsoldier wrote:Wouldn't expect to see to many bolt thrower fans around here or indeed any place lol.

Here's a video by Hail of Bullets:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=giTLeV6Y7ho
Hehe, btw, in comparison to Martin van Drunen (Asphyx & Hail of Bullets) Karl Willets sounds pretty tame, I think. He has a pretty sick sounding vocal style.
That stuff isn't related to WW I as well, btw. Wanna hint to that blog post by Scott R. Krol recommending this band as well: http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/blog.php?b=444 As you can see, there are strategy games grognards who like Death Metal! BTW, be sure to check out WinSPMB and WinSPWW2 over there as well, free updated remakes of Steel Panthers 1 and 2 with a massive load of scenarios!
Ah, just remembered another Death Metal band that did two albums on WW I, God Dethroned (from Belgium), they are called "Passiondale" and "Under the sign of the Iron Cross":
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3asnwJXJLOc
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FYj_wptr3CM
They are quite cool as well! Also saw them live one of the last years.
And you shouldn't forget Dismember (from Sweden) and the project their drummer started after the end of the band, Necronaut:

we should have at least a few more songs added to the soundtrack though, i really like the ones now, but come on, when i have to turn the music off after a while dont that ring a bell enough.

Reminds me of Europe At War but in The Great War there's more than one song so I can't really complain.
In spite of the Final Fantasy character it's pronounced sao-win after the Irish pagan god of death. I'm not a pagan but we're on a wargames website so I thought it fitting.

Yeah, that's a problem with many TBS, because they generally last much longer than other games, and usually the developers don't include enough songs on the soundtrack.Hammer4000 wrote:we should have at least a few more songs added to the soundtrack though, i really like the ones now, but come on, when i have to turn the music off after a while dont that ring a bell enough.
You could also add some Kreuzweg Ost stuff, but that's more related to WW 2, or purely to Christian religion on the newest album:
