OK, I will admit it – I’m getting up there in age, so I’m not up on the lingo you all are using.
What is “RO2”?

Red Orchestra 2 Stalingrad. It looks pretty darn cool, just its one of those that looks like it might be too adicting.

edit....

Actually this was enough of a push for me to go ahead and get it on steam. Waiting for the download now.....

It's a realistic wwii first person shooter. It is more realistic then the call of duty games for example, but not that realistic that it becomes boring; it's still a game.

Ah, I have yet to find a FPS game that I didn’t think of as boring from the moment it starts loading on my system. I cannot stand those kinds of games – they all seem exactly the same to me. The only one that I every liked might not be considered a FPS (unless the “S” is changed to meaning “Swordsman”) and that is Oblivion.

But – to each his own.

Probably showing my age some more here – aren’t I?

With RO2 though you are also leading a squad so, you can be hands on clearing the buildings or hands off and order the squads to do the dirty work. I haven't tried hands off yet, most my control of the squad has been very basic 'attack' or 'defend' so far though.

Is there any kind of a story line to it or is it just load a map and have at it?

its combat on the Eastern Front. RO2 focus is on the house to house fighting around Stalingrad. So its pretty intense, you die alot but then take over another soldier in your squad, so as long as your squad is not wiped out your still in the game. I have not done the multi player yet.

One concern right now is even on saturday there were few servers with under 100 ping that had any players in it. I don't think I would have had a problem playing except I don't have a headset and mic so was only trying to play on servers that allowed bots.

Thanks all the same. I’ sure I don’t have time for it and most likely it wouldn’t be for me anyhow.

If I had a penny for every time I played a few minutes of a 3d game that couldn't separate itself with the obsessive need to be real time, well I could sure buy a lot.

So I am actually amused to hear this design has decided that turns is not a crime. Turns is not a crime.

Turns is like cards, it's not the end of the world to design a board game that uses cards.

I was actually impressed to read the lack of tanks. Sure everyone likes tanks, but I've enjoyed the hell out of playing Up Front. A perfectly fine card using game, and tanks are not really welcome. They can be fitted in, but they end up looking like they don't really belong.

I have only experienced one game in recent years that pulls off squad tactical with turns. Sadly it is just a Nintendo DS title, so it is a bit limited in magnitude and likely has been largely forgotten like damn near anything on the DS that doesn't revolve around a well known console franchise. T.A.C Heroes Big Red 1
So the question I guess is, how does your creation compare?

Thanks, I guess :)

Compare to what? TAC Heroes Big Red 1? Because I haven't played that game.

Yes TAC Heroes is a fairly light weight game (no shock a lot of Nintendo DS titles need to stay within a small program size range and perform on a limited sized screen).

It is essentially a game of individual soldiers, whom you select from to perform missions. The game mechanics are basically turn based with very limited scope terrain. All in all a good game for the typical wargamer at heart. I think the only thing it had against it was limited marketing. It was on the shelf and off the shelf before anyone ever knew it had ever even been around. It likely was passed over by 90% of the Nintendo DS crowd.

Sadly I don't think most of the traditional PC wargame crowd gives much of a damn for the other Nintendo DS wargames either. Oh well I've moved on. I own a DSi XL and will continue to use it, but the future is clearly on a tablet running Windows 8 and not limited to the fickle whim of a teen pandering demographic. I also think little of those claiming they will never see the need of a tablet. Right buddy, I was there when people laughed at the need for desk tops and laughed at the need for laptops.

Those not making wargames for tablets are just limiting their avenues to sell wargames. This game Team Assault actually looks like it has tablet written all over it. If it won't run on a tablet though, you likely made some wrong choices eh.

I am not a fan of the tablet but I have to admit that its the future if something better does come along soon.

Almost picked up a tablet and would have one today if not for the fact I wanted to score some points with the wife. I went for a laptop upgrade which resulted in her getting my fairly good year old laptop to replace the definitely junker she had. Caused me to need to wait longer on the tablet.

I mainly want it to be an 8.5x11 book reader.

I remember 45s and LPs and 8 track and cassette and beta and VHS. My Apple IIe had a mouse but I don't remember using it. The joystick got a workout though.

I'm not sure I want to have a device on my lap to poke and prod all night like I do with the desktop. I do wonder how long before the mouse is a thing of the past.

For the old laptop, take a look at one of the ubuntu linux OS'es. They run so much faster than windows. Can't beat free plus the cost of a blank CD. You can even get emulators to play DS games and there are lots of free games that run natively in linux.
