Bug? Spanish partisans in French Morocco

Post by avoran »

I am playing a game (as Allies) of 2.0 in which the Axis player got Spain to join by rejecting the French armistice, etc.

It is now 1943 and the Allies are on the march. :) However, a minor glitch in our plans is the appearance of a Spanish (!?) partisan behind the lines in (Free) French Morocco. The hexes in this territory for some reason show up as of Spanish nationality.

While I can see that the Moroccans might just rebel against the French (thought probably not once the Allies are winning) they certainly wouldn't do it in the name of Spain! Also, even more oddly, the unit has a Spanish Republican flag.

I'm pretty sure this is a bug that should be fixed.

More broadly, it's bugged me for a while that the nationalities assigned to hexes in 'pre-conquered' territories are often not very appropriate. Hexes in Albania, for example, should be of Albanian nationality, not Italian. The Albanians certainly shouldn't rise up to support Italy if (unlikely, I know) they are overrun by the Allies before Italy surrenders! If anything, they should generate partisans for the Allied side. A similar logic applies to all the colonies of all countries in N Africa and (within 'Germany') to the former Czech territories. Arguably there is also a case for Arab revolts against the French and British in Syria, Egypt and Iraq - especially if the Germans are at the doors. That was something the Brits were seriously worried about in the real war. Harder to handle in the game, though, as those are treated as separate countries.

None of this has a major impact on the game, but I'm a big fan of historical realism :)

When Spain joins the Axis then they get a part of French Morocco. It becomes Spanish Morocco and part of core Spanish hexes. Therefore it's possible to spawn partisans there.

Spain demanded Gibraltar and what's today's Morocco as conditions for joining the Axis.

Did you mean 'Spain demanded Gibraltar and what's today's Morocco as conditions for joining the Axis.'?

Yes, thanks for mentioning the typo.

OK, thanks. It's not a bug :)

I still don't think it's very logical historically, though. The territory may be Spanish, but it shouldn't be 'core'. Surely the Berbers were not going to rise up in the name of Franco to drive out the Americans? :)
