I see our crafty opponents have opted for one very large battle against Numidians (no useful options at so large but one very powerful roman army) thus creating a large break level difference while fighting a small one on the reverse to minimise their loss and actually create an opportunity for victory (since they don't have to be burdened with countless ineffectual LH) and in effect win on the casualty difference from the larger battle. Sorry bro but I can't win versus Romans at 700 with Numidians. Looks like we'll have to join the line unless I can think of a crafty plan

davouthojo (Roman) 0/xx defeats pantherboy (Numidian) 16/16

I just bought the minimum and conceded the game to give us the slightest chance at victory by winning with a 17 BP margin in the minor battle. Unfortunately the Numidians are too deadly for Romans at 200pts with a 30 hex wide map and masses of lights with some cost effective heavier troops if needed and thus the ability to shoot the Romans to death and avoid battle. As for 700pts versus the Romans you get the opposite situation where the map is too small, you have 90 lights plus 12 useless HF versus Romans, 4 impact MF (small mercies) and 2 elephants. In the league using the Juba version at 500pts the Romans were still able to go wall to wall and decimate the Numidians.

As a side note my advice for the operation of King of the Hill is that players take it with a degree of sportsmanship. Leaving it totally up to the challenger is a way of creating some interesting matchups that will test the skill of both parties. If you want to stack the odds completely in your favor in one scenario then at least play it as a mirror for the other pair otherwise the King of the Hill will degenerate into very uninteresting matchups and not be about skill but how well you can pick the scenario to ensure victory. Who will want to be on top of the hill then and who will want to even bother with setting up challenges if the outcomes are predetermined?

Cheers

We had fun crafting a challenge that tilted the playing field!......Our frontal assaults on the hill are unlikely to pay off, based on evidence to date!

We were also surprised that you accepted so quickly - we had expected you to push back. The Kings should only be REQUIRED to accept identical challenges - others are their choice.

We don't want the hill if it is considered unsporting. Can I propose you make a counter-offer? CheAhn/Dazzam's result stands - how big a battle are you prepared to risk between us?

btw, we expected winning to be based on % casualties, not total number of BPs lost - seems fairer.

OK then. I'll just play the same as dazzam and use 200pts. I'll set it up now with the password pantherboy

Well done to Hojo and Dazzam, and good luck to the panther in the mirrored game.

The original intention was to allow the challengers scope to set the size of the battle, whether it was one expansion or all expansions, or a mirrored scenario game; where the Kings had scope to choose responding army and had free reign on the terrain.

As it happened challengers got more and more creative and prescriptive on the scope of what choices the Kings had. It was an interesting run.

Cheers to all

Victory to the pretenders........

16/23 davouthojo (LRR) vs 33/31 pantherboy (Numidians)

The poor legionaries managed to hold the line, and after the Numidian MF were routed, enough Numidian lights were cornered around the lakes to bring victory.....

Glad that it was managed in an even fight, and congrats to my partner dazzam who managed the more difficult job of winning with the Numidians......

Well played partner. A defeat of the Panther is no mean feat. Pretenders no more.
