TCP/IP game hangs on after first turn

Post by CptDeath »

Hi m8s.
I have been searching the forum but found nothing specifically like my problem.

The trouble is that a friend of mine and me have tried several times to play an TCP/IP game, but the game always hangs on after the first turn (1939 - Invasion of Poland).
We are playing both with GS, version: CEAW v1.12 GS v1.02 and both with same options (we talk by skype as we play), no firewalls nor anti-virus programs going around, I am hosting as Allied and he plays the Axis. He plays his part, invading Poland and besieging Warsaw, moving his subs and doing a couple of moves more and then I play my part moving the France units, all the naval units (all around) and embarking unit in England to carry it to the mainland. Then, when I click the "end turn" the game seems to hang on, with sand clocks in bot screens, never advancing to next turn.
The curious thing is that if we just play a couple of moves each the game do progresses to next turn, so the error should be with some specific unit/action.

Has anybody had the same trouble? Is there a solution to it? Perhaps going to the last version (1.07) or applying the "java patch"?

I have read elsewhere that GS is not designed for TCP/IP play, and that for that is better play vanilla CEAW, but this is not satisfying to us. We know each other, both we are hardcore wargamers (boardgames, i mean) playing since around 1980 and look for the most accurate and historical game possible without sacrificing fun (don't talk me about Hearts of Iron, that's sci-fi ;)), CEAW GS is more like we want, fun and serious,CEAW is not, is childplay (no offense pls, I do not mean is a bad game, it is fun, but simply donesn't fullfill our needs/likes).
I have read too that the best option is PBEM, but I do not consider this a viable option cause, even sending an e-mail each day (difficult for people with full-time jobs and childs), a game would last more than three months!! (and also less satisfying, cause we cant comment the opponent moves "live").

Please, help me if u can, we are part of a group of gamers, I think that our other 6-7 mates (we should own, all together around 500 wargames) would be pleased to buy and play the game if it is moderately historical (like GS) but I am completely sure that there will be no future if we have to play the "decaffeinated" vanilla CEAW game.

P.D.: Please excuse my bad english, I'm spanish, you know...

Sorry you are having problems but unfortunately I don't know how you would resolve this.

You could try playing PBEM instead? It is not much different to TCP IP play except the opponent does not have to sit and wait in game for their turn.

Well, I'm afraid this is not a good option to us, as I said. We really enjoy seeing the other one moves and commenting them, this no sit-and-wait time for us, just fun ;), and also PBEM could last too long to be a satisfactory experience and lacks the "real time" comments.

Anyway thanks a lot for answering. I'll wait just in case anyone happens to have a solution or solved this case. Meanwhile we'll try with version 1.07 just to check if it works. (hope is last you loose)

Thanks a lot again.

I'm afraid there isn't any solution. TCP/IP simply does not work with the GS expansion. This expansion was developed by a group of fans and is offered as a free addition to the standard game. It was developed and balanced for PBEM and hotseat play. No attempt was made to improve AI play; however, bugs that cause the AI to crash were fixed so players can play against the AI if they wish. See Axis vs AI Tutorial AAR and Histrocial AAR.

Anyway, as posted above PBEM is really your only option to play GS against your friend.
