Catalans and other Odd balls

Post by markm »

This probably belongs in the army list section, but as I don't have access to that, thought I'd stick it up here :D

One of my 28mm armies is the Grand Company, and I have used it succesfully with fun games in WAB. Using 2 old WRG lists, the DBM list and the WAB list, it's pretty easy to come up with some sensible lists and troop designations. Except for one, the Alumghavers themselves!

They would have to be MF and probably Impact Foot, Jav, Superior, unprotected, skilled swordsmen, drilled? I just don't think that they would work well for the 9pts. Not looking for a supertroop here, but they did manage to kick some serious ass from a variety of enemies, and I don't see them being able to do that.

Second issue is the almughaver scouts. If they should get HTW then they should probably be Impact foot, which seems to be somewhat unusual for LF.

Thoughts and opinions appreciated as I'd like to give these guys a try.

This also got me thinking about other 'special' units that may cause problems. Thebans being an example. Is it proposed that these type of special troops be dealt with separately (in the army lists for example) or simply ignored due to the scale of the game? Simply running them 3 ranks deep doesn't exactly do much for them :)

Close but they are being classed as offensive spearmen/spearmen. Assuming they keep their order they are pretty handy troops. The ones I have found in the medieval lists are all: MF, Superior (or average), Unprotected, Undrilled, -, Offensive spear, spearmen. The only time I have used them they were pretty good.

I suspect these will just become LF, Unprotected, Javelin, Light spear, -

The sacred band will be a BG of superior, drilled hoplites and you will only be allowed on BG. Essentially they are the same as Spartiates.

And before anyone raises the point remember that the Spearmen melee classification also includes a certain amount of sword use where appropriate (and often gets the right effect compared to Swordsman).
