Strange Score in Tournament Results
Iain or whoever,
Got a strange score in my first game against Toten in round 3.
My results page shows timed out - defeat but it is the 29/1.
The in game score is 20/20 Carthage (Toten) and 11/27 Spanish (Me).
The last in game message is victory to spanish.
Points awarded 11 to me and 19 to Toten.
Our second game is still in progress - not timed out.
Is this correct?

Just finished the second game on Toten's turn - nailbiting but he lost his last break points with the death of his commander.Triarius wrote:Iain or whoever,

In game message Carthaginian Victory.
But in my results summary it reports defeat 'Timed Out' 6.30pm local time 29/1/11.

I've just finished my fourth round games and from here it looks like the tournament went really well. The scoring system appeared to work OK (not that I've tried to work it out myself). Well done to Slitherine for creating the system that will add such a lot to an already great game!
I suppose the only issue I have is the hat-full of points you get if your opponent doesn't show up for the game(s). In theory this will leave a player with 60 points for that round where even the best player who actually fought is unlikely to score anything like that from the two games.
Having said that I'm not sure what could be done instead. Maybe an average score of the other winning competitors' points? (I guess that would be very hard to program in though).
What are the other players' and designers' thoughts on this?

The points gained from no-shows is the only niggle I have too.maximvs wrote:I've just finished my fourth round games and from here it looks like the tournament went really well. The difficulty lies in not punishing the player without an opponent, it's hardly his fault anyway.
The average of other winning players games is a good idea, but probably not practical from a programming point of view.
So I've got three suggestions:
1. Instead of gaining 30+30 for a no-show win, it should be 20+20. (maybe 22+22).
Looking at the table, anyone winning with more than 20pts is actually fairly rare.....Well, aside from the great white sharks that are circling the top of the table *LOL*
Gaining 60pts is a little much. I must admit that I felt sorry for poor EricS who gained 60pts from a no-show, jumped up the table and then ran smack into pantherboy......That's gotta hurt.
2. No-shows are invariably at the bottom of the table. The problem is that if there's only one no-show in a tournament, the effect keeps rippling through the next rounds.
So, I'd suggest that if one player drops out, the current bottom player is also cut. In such a way that there'll always be an even number of players.
I know this is galling to the poor guy that is cut without having done anything wrong, but the alternative is having people jumping the tables because they suddenly triple their total points in one go.
3. As and when the tournaments become a fixed feature, I think there should be a banning function for no-shows.
Not for eternity, but banning a no-show from joining the next (or possibly next two) tournaments seems fair to me.
This is for straight no-shows only. Losing because you run out of time can happen to anyone.
To me, joining a tournament means also committing to *stay* in the tournament until the end, no matter if you win or lose.
Having the option of banning earlier no-shows for a while might persuade people to stay in, even when things turn sour.
Finally, I'll second the general positive feedback.
The tournaments are great fun, and this one has IMO got the timing down to perfection.
Can only speak for myself, but these small, fast-paced games are much more fun than having larger scenarios played out over a week.

I've got two words for ya: Math is hard.
I agree completely, 60 points is way too much and as you said can be more of a penalty than a bonus. 22-22 sounds about right, in any game you are probably going to lose some elements and this should be reflected in the 'default' score.
Not sure how the scoring points system works but in round 2 I won both games but it was scored 15-15 11-19. Admittedly one game was really close (94% - 100%) but if it says your victorious shouldn't it have at least gone 14-16?
Also one other point, I thought in a swiss chess tournament you didn't play the same player twice. In this one I've now played Toten twice. Not that I'm complaining, he's fun to play and the games have been good fun, but this may be a bug.

Triaris Time Out
I don't know what happened to poor Triaris. He won both of the games...One just barely. But when I checked my completed games it gave me a Victory for both because he had timed out....
Hey Triaris what did your time clock say during those last few moves? You were tardy in getting the games back to me....did you not watch the clock? I enjoyed the boost to my score but I don't know if I deserved it.....oh well. I am looking forward to the next tournament.

Thanks Toten - they were two great games especially that last one - still waiting for my nails to grow back.Toten wrote:I don't know what happened to poor Triaris. I should never have used a general not registered with the PFA - wouldn't have been docked all those points
The bug cost me 22 or 24 points and 4th or 5th spot - "Infamy Infamy they've all got it in for me"
Great tournament though really enjoyed it.
Sorry Ian couldnt reply till Now lost my external Hard drive and Just got net back today, In Cyclone Yasi Here in Qld Australia and thus all my files and the Complete Fog range i had installed on it.
