PROPOSAL: Artillery move and fire ? and other things..

Post by vonbert »

I just bought FOG + 3 add on

and im glad to have this "battlefield" system under my digital thumbs..
very easy to play , good ergonomics in many aspects of the interface.
It seems as better/evoluted version of DBM.. :P

I had experiences with other wargames on pc or tabletop .. so i just put down what i felt after a first glance over the game

 In FOG Artillery has a very "powerful" behaviour
it can MOVE and then FIRE in the same turn.
I dunno if when it does this way it has some malus on firepower.. but i feel this is a little "strange" compared to what is common in many wargames
(artillery shell normally limber-unlimber, or at least pack it all up and move.. slowly move)

Would not be better to fix that into: if artillery move.. will not fire that same turn ?
(or if it does will be applying a move-malus )
( or just leave the move-fire option to light artillery)

Other suggestions:

 THE REPORT BOX
The little black-opaque box on the bottom left collect all events/fires/combats happened.
This box could maybe be made more meaningful, and maybe useful:

- The various entry shell be clickable: so if i go into the kitchen to turn the pasta over the fire while i'm waiting for AI to move.. when i come back i'll be able to see "where" that event/combat happened , clicking on it.. (i know , i know.. that play pc and cook/eat at same time is not a good habits.. :P but with addicting games it can happen ! )
- Maybe a little TAB system can be put on, with possibilities to filter events in different list-sublist (ie. All - Rout/Kill - Combats - )

- DICE -
Also referred maybe to the report box: i would love to show there the DICE results used for a combat ! I imagine a digital "roll" is made, so for my personal taste would be nice to see the score reported in the report box beside the text explicating the event, maybe just an icon of a little-little dice would fit.
Why ? cause i love dices and cause i like to knows/sense/guess what the next score will be ! :P This way if i had 3 six in a row.. i'm in to imagine there will not be another soon.. anyway.. personal taste.

 THE DAG TABLE
I feel that putting some slightly different background under some coloumns will make the table easier to read (ie. make the cost coloumn more visible)
Maybe also changing some coloumn position could be checked .
Some icone as coloumn header can also be a try.. to see if they fit.
Maybe i'll try to post a screen for what i'm thinking of .

(is it possibile to post images over the forum ? how ? writing it down as a img tag in html ? )

 BATTLE SET UP - choose a saved army as AI opponent
I mainly play alone this days ( i like to win.. while i get used to the game.. but hope i receive some human challenges soon )
I tried to battle with the add on, making up my army.. then selecting the enemies from a BOOK/addon, or letting AI choose.
ok..
but i would love to ask .. could not be possible to choose as AI army, an army that we/gamers, have created before ?
I mean choose from a list of "saved army".. that shell only present armies of the correct amount of points (400pt, 500pt, and so on )
Last night i battled with a random Persian army.. that was not very much well-mixed.. was too much mixed , if not a little messy ! :p

Im sure this can be done designing a scenario, but i still must explore that part of FOG, but i sense would not be "fast-to-play" as the way i suggest here.

Cheers from Torino, and .. well .. if somebody wanna play.. in 2h i'll be home, without family, ready to battle (while eating.. ) !
Just send me a message and we arrange.. :) thanks !

You'll have an easy victory.. i suppose..

Heavy artillery can not move at all.
Lighter aritllery can move but in my experience it can't shoot if it moved. Haven't played for a bit so perhaps I had missed something.
You can increase the information in that box, I just can't recall what the shortcut is for it, but it is listed in the help manual. It will show your dice rolls etc, but I don't think you can click and see where it happened. In the AI turn the info will whip by at light speed so better if you can read real fast.
You can choose your opposing army from the DAG list if you want. I think its a drop down under the game set up that you can choose the AI army from one of your saved DAG armies. Can't recall exactly I don't play the AI much, multi player is much better and a lot more fun.
Hope that helped a bit :)

At this time you can only select which army list the AI uses in a DAG battle, you cannot select to fight a premade DAG army however. I do believe that might be on the Road map/wishlist area.
Until then will just have to accept what the AI like to purchase ( which is much improved over how it was pre several patches ago)

Alos not sure if you are awre but I think hot key P (or maybe U) shows the combat details more verbiose and will show the dice you rolled.....

Thank you !

As usual when i buy a game.. 1st i play.. then i go read the rules ! :D
I'll try the verbose report later at home :)

About to let AI use a DAG saved-army made by human is an option i really do hope will be implemented.. can be also useful to test some armies we wish to choose between.

For the rest til now i do love this game, is simple to play (but complex as x rules behind) , historical, is a wargame..

Later i wish to try some human..

If i have understood well.. i must go over the Multiplayer site.. and put a challenge.
I suppose i must have already choosen an army before do that..
I'll try.

In Multiplayer usually people fights with armies of the same book or is more common to have unhistorical meeting ?

Welcome, vonbert.

Multiplayer is the way to go. For DAG games you must first creat an army you wish to play. Most people use 500 points or more. Go to the mltiplayer tab and then issue a challenge. There you can chose what ever options you want including limiting opponents to the same book or not. I prefere historical matchups, but some don't. If you don't chose to password the game, you'll have a game going right away.

COMMAND & CONTROL

Post by vonbert »

A question about command and control.

The range of commanderd can be 8,5, 3 hex ?

This can be extent by units /battlegroups in formation ?

1) I mean.. if i have a line of 6 battlegroup, but only one is under command.. the rest of the line will be out of command ?
2) Or the rest will be IN command as the commanded battlegroup extent the command to all adjacent (and in formation , same direction , in line ) battlegroup ?

From what i've seen it seems to me that the first opttion is the one used in FOG, correct ?

Well.. maybe i would have considered also the other option as a plausible rule for command&control , this way the importance of forming battle lines would have been increased, in addition to other support/rules that maybe already state some bonus for troops formed in line (support?) .

aw.. just my 1 cent thoughts ! :D

Option 1 is correct for FoG PC. It's different on the TT and the PC game may eventually get line commands.
