FOW shooting glitch

Post by andersm73 »

Noticed in a game I'm playing that enemy archer units that retreat into an FOW area and then shoot from off screen, the missiles actually appear to be coming from behind my units, is this a glitch? Doesn't cause a game problem but looks pretty strange...

cheers

How can they be in FoW but shoot at you?

Thanks for reporting this bug. We've managed to reproduce it, so no need for a screenshot or saved game now.

This is due to the change in the Fog of War logic in 1.2.8. It used to be that, as enemy battle groups moved around in a replay, you would steadily see more and more of the map, so there was no way an enemy could be in FoW but shoot at you. Now, though, when a battle group moves, only the side that owns that battle group gets hexes revealed. The other side gets no hexes revealed, and can even get hexes hidden.
So, imagine you're watching a replay, and your opponent has some archers hidden behind a line of other battle groups. In 1.2.8, if they move the line out of the way, you won't get to see the archers. When the archers shoot, there's now a bug in that their arrows come from a corner of the map.

(The rationale behind the 1.2.8 FoW changes was to let you 'hide' battle groups behind your front line, and not have them revealed to your opponent as they advance.)

This bug will be fixed by making the hex occupied by any enemy that shoots visible, regardless of the general FoW rules.

The change in FoW was to reflect a solid wall of advancing troops. How could a missle unit fire through a solid wall?

They can't fire through the solid wall, but the solid wall can move out of the way and leave them a clear shot.

I assume the "wall" then moves back :)

It is well documented that pikemen of the day were trained to wheel back a part of the phalanx to enable missle fire from the rear. They would then form up again advancing all the while. :)
