Cleomenean War: Battle of Hecatombeaum

Post by grumblefish »

Okay, here's my first go at making a new scenario. I'm open to all suggestions on how to improve it; at this point I'm out of ideas. The primary sources that I have read for the Cleomenean War are Polybius' Histories, Plutarch's Life of Cleomenes, and Plutarch's Life of Aratus. He might've gotten a mention in Pausanius' work, but I don't recall.

The download is here:

To use it, simply extract the folder to "Documents\Slitherine\FieldOfGlory Scenarios" and then load up Field of Glory. 8)

Oh, I forgot to mention that I've played the scenario in its current form three times now; twice as Sparta, once as the Achaean League. I think Sparta is a little too weak at this point, but I'm not certain. Aratus has nothing that can stand up to the pikemen, but he has a good 8000 men more than Cleomenes. I find the best tactic for Sparta is to simply rush the pikemen forward, and have the hoplites follow behind to make sure nobody flanks them; don't bother chasing the skirmishers, either. Just smash into the Thureophoroi/Thorakites and be done with it; the longer their army is in the field, the more likely it is that they'll encircle you.

The reason the Spartans get those super pike-men units is this:

"After this, to begin with, Cleomenes himself placed his property in the common stock, as did Megistonoüs his step-father and every one of his friends besides; next, all the rest of the citizens did the same, and the land was parcelled out. Cleomenes also assigned a portion of land to each man who had been exiled by him, and promised to bring them all home after matters had become quiet. Then he filled up the body of citizens with the most promising of the free provincials, and thus raised a body of four thousand men-at‑arms, whom he taught to use a long pike, held in both hands, instead of a short spear, and to carry their shields by a strap instead of by a fixed handle. Next he devoted himself to the training of the young men and to the "agoge," or ancient discipline, most of the details of which Sphaerus, who was then in Sparta, helped him in arranging. And quickly was the proper system of bodily training and public messes resumed, a few out of necessity, but most with a willing spirit, subjecting themselves to the old Spartan regime with all its simplicity." - Plutarch, Life of Cleomenes.

Different windows version have slightly different save defaults :-(

Try searching you 'my documents' folder for *.fogsg or data. One of these will find the folder.

Even better just build a custom game 'test 1' then search your folders for 'test 1'

Hi
I have played the scenario and achieved victory commanding the Spartans just for a single point. It was very fun, I enjoyed very much your scenario. I have some technical questions as well.
1) In the Spartan army all the Periokoi are Medium Infantry except for one Heavy Infantry unit, was that intended?
2) Could you make a leader of any unit in the game?

Glad you liked it.

(1) That wasn't intended; all Perioikoi should be medium infantry. Must have slipped by me somehow.

(2) Yeah, you can make a leader out of any unit in the game. In the scenario editor, just hold the shift key when you right click on a unit.

A rar file is like a zip file; you need to extract it first. You can download winrar for free; just do a google search and it should be easy enough to find, it's a very popular programme.

Otherwise, you're doing the right thing.

Great Scenario, I managed a win playing the Spartans, the hill helps with the defense. I am looking forward to more scenarios, something from the Servile Wars with Spartacus in the lead?

I'm not sure if you saw it or not, but the latest patch added Spartacus' last battle against Crassus. :)

Thanks Giob, I'll try it out. You might want to make a new thread for it, though, so more people can see it.

EDIT: Comes up as missing or deleted file for me, too.

It's the last battle on the list, "Silarus River" is the name. I believe I tried it in multiplayer once as Crassus, and lets just say that history did not proceed as expected.
