Roman were organized with a left side of infantry and a right side of all sort of cavalry.
As roman came forward to engage the line of Arab infantry, Arab cavalry could outnumber them and got flanking opportunities

Ironclad Gallic 300-101 BC with Samnite allies defeated Bodhran Jewish 163-111 BC, 69-58

The Gallic forces deployed on the open area of field facing some high ground on its left and a small lake on its right but of the enemy all that could be seen was just a few light troops near the woods in the far distance. The Gauls advanced but as the `enemy remained hidden the option was either to remain in the open for an likely draw or push forward for a risky battle in and near the woods. Daunted, they nevertheless opted for the latter.

Over the next few turns they advanced with their light infantry leading to engage the enemy lights who were gradually reinforced as more of their light companions emerged from under their tree cover. As the Gallic lights were heavily outnumbered by now, the rest of the Gallic army closed up as quickly as possible, and the fighting moved into and beyond the first wood. The enemy lights were now reinforced by heavy cavalry and foot emerging from different directions from under their leafy cover. This clever play and timing, saw the Gallic cavalry overwhelmed by missiles and attacks and the warbands were equally disadvantaged by having to fight in the woods, or by multiple attacks as well as by the narrowness of the open corridors.

Arriving reinforcements finally included the medium Samnites and a couple of loose order warbands who being deployed on the Gallic left wing at the start had taken longer. This gave the Gauls a better chance of fighting in the woods and meanwhile a significant action was taking place in the open where the number of warbands engaged together with a flanking cavalry unit had an advantage against the opposing enemy - irregulars and zealots. Also a detached group of Jewish lights which had emerged late from the western wood was eventually defeated. The struggle had been long and fiercely contested throughout and it was only at the very end that the Gauls achieved a victory. Thanks to Bodran for a well fought and enjoyable battle.

Ironclad Arab (Conquest) 638-684 AD defeated EdmondDantes Norman 923-1040 AD, 52-8

The Arabs deployed in a strong defensive position between buildings and flanking high ground and woods well back towards their base line. The Normans responded by bravely advancing across the field with their strong lancer cavalry wings and their shieldwall offensive centre. Their light archers reached firing positions before a number of enemy lights could redeploy from the wings to block them. In view of this and to avoid loss of initiative the Arab commander moved forward his right centre of veteran spearmen supported by cavalry to attack the enemy whilst the extreme right of mainly archers remained in the woods.

On the Arab left comprising a strong hill position, the defenders beat off an enemy lancer attack and the supporting Arab cavalry then led a successful counter attack. Fighting spread along the entire front as the Norman shieldwall units were engaged by the veteran spearmen with supporting cavalry and the opposing lancer units were forced back. Arab massed and light archers continued to provided missile support for attacks and for flank defensives including heavily depleting a lancer unit which had broken through. The result was a decisive Arab victory. Thanks to EdmondDantes for an entertaining game.

The German cavalry and lights came first, and there was a big skirmish that went greatly in the way of the Vikings, setting the Germans back early, but they did well in getting close to evening the score, until the lack of numbers gave way to some flanks and eventual total rout. GG!
