The Germans formed up in a tight rectangle with cavalry of their right flank, heavy infantry on their left and bow and auxilia palatina in the middle where there was a large rough area.

The Indians massed their cavalry on their left with elephants behind, placing lights oposite the rough and bow and foot on their right.

The battle turned on whether the Indian cavalry and elephants could take out the German cavalry before the heavy foot could intervene. The Indians prevailed, the Hephalite cavalry particulalry doing well.

Thank you Ironclad for a tough battle.

Chris Townsend Numidian or Moorish 55BC - 6AD with Roman defeats Ironclad Germanic Foot Tribes 260-599 AD with Roman 379 by the score of 46 to 21.

Both sides of the map had woods flanking an open area, with mostly open terrain separating the two armies. So both sides hid a lot of their initial deployment in the woods, brought artillery to deter any straight forward charges, and minimized the investment in cavalry. The opening stages were about cautious probing, mostly with skirmishers, while the Germanic foot slowly advanced. The skirmishers on the Numidian right flank though they saw an opportunity and charged, only to be met by Germanic skirmishers that had the gumption to stand and fight - probably because they knew they had reinforcements available right behind them in the woods! Although costly, this diversion did draw those reinforcements into the open, and the Numidians were able to determine that the Germanic right flank woods had only held skirmishers - so the Phoenician style troops were ordered to emerge from their own woods and engage with the small number of Romans (and some skirmishers) defending a patch of rough terrain. This attracted the attention of the warbands, so the Numidian's Roman heavies advanced, attracting even more warbands in a general melee. Finally, the initial diversion bore fruit as the Numidians irregulars and Scutarii emerged from their right flank woods to fall upon a now outnumbered Germanic left, quickly raking up flanking opportunities with the usual consequences.

It was fun to see how much chaos we caused after the initial caution, even without cavalry! A good game.

The Numidian side of the map was largely clear, while the Germans had large woods on their left, separated from the centre by a small lake, and then a series of terrain (woods, rough, then more woods on the Numidian side separating the centre from the open right flank. Both armies would have preferred the terrain to be reversed, so there was some maneuvering. The Numidians put the Phoenician infantry on their right, the Romans with elephants in the middle, and the irregulars supported by Spanish Scutarii on their left, with screens of skirmishers (light and horse), and no attempt to bring cavalry against he German horse. The Germans deployed their Dacian infantry in the centre, with horse on the flanks, and a reserve of horse in the centre, which was promptly sent to reinforce their right. The Numidians refused their left flank and advanced their centre, while checking out the woods in front of their right flank - where the javelin men discovered noble cavalry. So that side of the map ended up with mostly maneuvering, and the battle on the other flank was a draw (though bloodier), so the decisive fight was in the centre. Here some initial poor morale checks (perhaps the Dacians had not seen elephants before?) led to the remaining troops being out numbered, and eventually failing due to attrition and flanking maneuvers.

In a wild furball of a fight, the highly mobile Avars used the large expanse of rough terrain in the middle to run from the pachyderms while killing the less mobile Indian archers.

the first five turns went to the Frankish as they almost surrounded the Avar lancers who foolishly attack their center....after a short fighting retreat the Avars used their mobility to cut off small infantry cohorts and quickly turned both flanks causing a rout.
